At least a dozen shells exploded at a large nuclear plant in southern Ukraine on Sunday, Ukrainian and Russian authorities said, damaging equipment in attacks that the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency called “extremely disturbing.” Russian and Ukrainian nuclear energy authorities each blamed the other side’s forces for the strikes, the latest to hit the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is the largest in Europe. The attacks have raised fears of a serious nuclear accident at the plant, which is occupied by Russian forces, although so far there have been no reports of any leak of radiation. “Explosions occurred at the site of this major nuclear power plant, which is completely unacceptable,” the director general of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, said in a statement . “Whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately.” Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear company, said on Sunday that the shelling continued “all morning” and damaged … [Read more...] about Russia and Ukraine again trade blame for shelling at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

Here are the risks as shelling continues at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Repeated shelling inside the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant complex over the past seven days has revived concerns of a nuclear accident. The Ukrainians have accused the Russians of directing strikes there to cut off energy supplies to other cities and to try to discredit the Ukrainian military in the world’s eyes. The Russians say Ukraine is doing the shelling. Both sides would suffer if a meltdown occurred and spread radioactive material. While they are designed to withstand a range of risk — from a plane crashing into the facility to natural disasters — no operating nuclear power plant has ever been in the middle of active fighting, and this one was not designed with the threat of cruise missiles in mind. There are several main concerns. The concrete shell of the site’s six reactors offer strong protection, as was the case when the No. 1 reactor was struck in March, officials say. More worrying is the chance that a power transformer is hit by shelling, raising the risk of … [Read more...] about Here are the risks as shelling continues at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

And You Thought Your Family Had Problems
THE NEW EARTH , by Jess Row Officially, there is no hall of fame for unhappy families. But even the staunchest Russian novelist might be hard pressed to match the particular gift for dysfunction that the Wilcoxes, subjects of Jess Row’s sprawling metafiction “The New Earth,” display with such impressive esprit de corps across nearly 600 dense and often wildly discursive pages. Death and divorce are a given; immigration, climate change and crises of faith crowd the margins, clambering to compete with a thousand-year conflict in the Middle East. Incest eventually enters the chat, an assiduous but uninvited guest, and race hovers over it all, a quivering question mark. (The impetus for everything, naturally, is a wedding.) It’s all richly imagined, reflexively neurotic and frequently quite dazzling. It’s also more than a single book, even one guided by a keen and careful hand, can adequately contain: a Gordian knot of domestic melodrama, global politics and high-flying philosophy … [Read more...] about And You Thought Your Family Had Problems
Why does Russia want tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 The announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus appears to be another attempt to raise the stakes in the conflict in Ukraine. It follows Putin's warnings that Moscow is ready to use “all available means,” to fend off attacks on Russian territory, a reference to its nuclear arsenal. A look at Putin’s statement and its implications: HOW DID PUTIN EXPLAIN HIS MOVE? Putin said President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has long urged Moscow to station its nuclear weapons in his country, which has close military ties with Russia and was a staging ground for the invasion of neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. Russia already has helped modernize Belarusian warplanes to make them capable of carrying nuclear weapons — something that Belarus' authoritarian leader has … [Read more...] about Why does Russia want tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus?
Lonnie Holley’s Life of Perseverance, and Art of Transformation
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — Lonnie Holley’s life began at an impossible place: 1950, seventh among his mother’s 27 children, in Jim Crow-era Birmingham, Ala., the air thick with violent racism toward him and everyone he loved. Things got even worse as he grew up. At four years old, he said, he was traded for a bottle of whiskey by a nurse who had stolen him away from his mother. Later, as the story goes, he was in a coma for several months and pronounced brain-dead after being hit by a car that dragged him along several blocks. Then he spent time in the infamous Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children until his paternal grandmother — he refers to her simply as “Momo” — was able to take him away at the age of 14. He forged his way out of the miry roads of his origins, becoming a musician and filmmaker, and teaching himself to make visual art. Since then, he has come far, far enough to have just completed a residency as an artist at the Elaine de Kooning House in this celebrity-filled … [Read more...] about Lonnie Holley’s Life of Perseverance, and Art of Transformation
