BUFFALO, Minn. (WCCO) – Across the country, students are turning their grief into action as part of a nationwide walkout to protest gun violence. Buffalo High School students walked out of their classrooms at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Buffalo students said that, after a shooter killed 21 people and injured 17 others at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday, that they’re afraid a shooting could happen at their school too. “I’m 16. I shouldn’t have to worry about my life every single day I walk into the building, but I do and I’m sick of it,” said 10th grade student Olivia Telecky. “Every time you see a school shooting on the news you think, ‘is that going to be me next time?'” she added. “We talk a lot in school about future plans and stuff but honestly it’s hard to imagine having a future because sometimes I just think, ‘am I going to make it out of high school?'” Telecky says in terms of reform, she wants to see background checks implemented. “And then there are … [Read more...] about Buffalo High School Students Walk Out To Protest Gun Violence

Fremont police said they arrested a 17-year-old high school student for threatening gun violence toward a school employee on social media, and for a hate crime. The student, a minor, was booked into juvenile hall on Wednesday on suspicion of felony terrorist threats after Fremont police received an alert at about 9:45 a.m. from American High School staff that a student was making threats on social media, Fremont Police Department said. Police did not detail the specific social media threats, but said the student made “direct threats of gun violence towards the school employee” and “also made comments about committing additional gun violence at an unnamed secondary school.” The posts also included “numerous racial epithets,” which prompted the hate crime investigation, police said. School resource officers identified the student who they said was making the social media posts, police said. Police contacted the student and his family “at a location away from the school” and … [Read more...] about Fremont high school student threatened gun violence toward school employee, police say

Shrewsbury teen’s mental health podcast aims to help fellow high school students

SHREWSBURY (CBS) — According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control, more than 40% of high school students reported poor mental health during the pandemic. To make matters worse, there is a shortage of therapists to treat these kids who are suffering from anxiety and depression. The CDC survey found four out of ten kids reported feeling “persistently sad or hopeless,” and one in five saying they have contemplated suicide. Compounding the crisis is the shortage of therapists needed to help treat these kids. That is part of the reason high school senior Katelyn Smith, who is from Shrewsbury, turned her brother’s old bedroom into a makeshift studio and started her own podcast called “Modern Adolescence.” She created a makeshift studio in her brother’s old bedroom, complete with video camera, lighting, and editing equipment. She researches mental health topics and schedules interviews with fellow classmates and professionals. Katelyn understands what it is like to live … [Read more...] about Shrewsbury teen’s mental health podcast aims to help fellow high school students
