When the playwright and director George C. Wolfe moved to New York City in his 20s, he got a job at an archive for Black cultural history , where his work saving newspaper articles and maintaining records fueled a habit of preserving his own ephemera. “It activated this sort of curiosity-slash-obsession about who gets remembered, what gets saved, what gets valued and what doesn’t,” Wolfe said recently. On Thursday, the New York Public Library announced that it had acquired more than 50 boxes of material from throughout Wolfe’s career, during which he became one of the most sought-after theater directors in the country. His productions, including “Angels in America” and “Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk,” garnered multiple Tony Awards, and he’s credited with revolutionizing the Public Theater over a decade as its producer. Working scripts, correspondence with theatrical figures such as Tony Kushner (with whom Wolfe worked closely on “Angels in America”) and photographs … [Read more...] about New York Public Library Acquires George C. Has New York Reached Peak Pork?
The chef Silvia Garcia-Nevado had just launched into a description of the jamón Ibérico at Bar Vinazo , a new Spanish wine bar in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood, the other night when a cook came by and tapped her on the shoulder. “Sorry to interrupt,” he said, looking anxiously at a nearby wooden stand cradling a leg of partially carved Cinco Jotas ham. “There are more orders for the Cinco. Do you want … me to slice it?” Garcia-Nevado considered this only for a moment. (The Cinco Jotas, which retails to restaurants for a little over $1,000 per leg, and which is cured in Atlantic sea salt in southwestern Spain, requires a specific carving technique to elicit its uniquely nutty, juicy flavor.) Then she shook her head no, and darted off to resume her position at the ham, where she spent much of the rest of the night wielding a long, thin carving knife as though it were a bow and she was first chair violin. Suddenly, specialty cured pork seems to be on every other menu in … [Read more...] about Has New York Reached Peak Pork?

The motion seeks to have Merchan, who presided over Trump’s arraignment on 34 counts of falsifying business records in Manhattan, step aside in the case, Trump's lawyers said. “President Trump, like all Americans, is entitled under the Constitution to an impartial judge and fair legal process," his lawyers said in the statement, adding that the motion alleges Merchan has "significant conflicts." The motion is not yet public and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office was making redactions, lawyers involved in the process said. A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney's office said they would review the motion and respond in court … [Read more...] about Trump attorneys seek recusal of judge in New York criminal case
