Stella Tennant, the unimpeachably aristocratic model and inspiration to designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace, died on Tuesday in Duns, Scotland. She was 50. Her death was announced by her family, which did not provide a cause. Police reports noted no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, according to the BBC. The granddaughter of Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke of Devonshire, and Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, the youngest of the Mitford sisters, Ms. Tennant was directly descended from Bess of Hardwick, builder of the opulent Elizabethan manor Hardwick Hall, who was once reputed to be the richest woman in England. Ms. Tennant wore her rarefied heritage lightly throughout her three-decade run in fashion, during which she walked the runways for most major fashion designers; was featured in advertising campaigns for nearly every important label; appeared on scores of magazine covers; and worked with a full roster of the world’s elite … [Read more...] about Stella Tennant, Aristocratic British Model, Is Dead at 50

With Bucks Facing Elimination, Uncertainty Grows Around Giannis Antetokounmpo
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Before the Milwaukee Bucks labored through a stretch of basketball that could wind up altering their future, Giannis Antetokounmpo did something that he tends to do well: He elevated for a dunk, a brief burst of explosiveness that gave the Bucks a fourth-quarter lead against the Miami Heat in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. But upon landing, Antetokounmpo grimaced. He had rolled his right ankle in the first quarter, and perhaps it was bothering him even if he would later refuse to admit it. But in that moment, his expression — his face contorted in pain as he turned to get back on defense — was, in its own way, a sign of so much more misery to come. The Bucks went the rest of the game without making a field goal, and their 115-100 loss to the Heat on Friday night put them in the deepest hole imaginable. Miami will have a chance to sweep the top-seeded Milwaukee in the best-of-seven of series on Sunday afternoon, while thorny questions … [Read more...] about With Bucks Facing Elimination, Uncertainty Grows Around Giannis Antetokounmpo

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Fans angry at being blocked from entering a Salvadoran soccer league match knocked down an entrance gate to the stadium, leading to a crush that left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured, officials and witnesses said Sunday. The stampede took place late Saturday during a quarterfinals match between clubs Alianza and Fas at Monumental Stadium in Cuscatlan in southern San Salvador, the nation's capital. “The game was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. but they closed the gate at 7 p.m. and left us outside (the stadium) with our tickets in our hands," said Alianza fan José Ángel Penado. “People got angry. We asked them to let us in, but no. So they knocked the gate down.” Civil Protection director Luis Amaya said about 500 people had been attended to and about 100 were taken to hospitals. At least two of the … [Read more...] about El Salvador soccer stadium stampede leaves 12 dead after fans rush entrance gate
Sabrina Ionescu Opens Up About Kobe Bryant and Rookie Year Woes
Want more basketball in your inbox? Sign up for Marc Stein’s weekly N.B.A. newsletter here . Sabrina Ionescu could spend a considerable amount of time, if she wished, dwelling on everything that was snatched away from her in what was scripted to be a momentous year. She prefers to focus on the fortune that enabled her to avoid surgery after a nasty ankle injury prematurely ended her rookie season with the W.N.B.A.’s Liberty. “With everything that’s happened, with everything that’s been out of my control, I’ve just handled it the best that I can,” Ionescu said. Last fall, Ionescu, 22, returned to the University of Oregon for her senior season, rather than turn professional, to try to win the N.C.A.A. title that had eluded the Ducks in the 2018-19 season. When the coronavirus pandemic wiped out the 2020 N.C.A.A. women’s basketball tournament in March, Ionescu moved on to the W.N.B.A . She was the No. 1 over all pick in the draft in April and one of the … [Read more...] about Sabrina Ionescu Opens Up About Kobe Bryant and Rookie Year Woes
Basketball and Social Justice: Bucks Say ‘It’s Harder to Do Both’
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Everything was simpler in November and December, back when the Milwaukee Bucks were rolling through the regular season and chasing a championship and no one knew anything about the coronavirus. Giannis Antetokounmpo had somehow improved his game, and the future was rife with possibility. When the Bucks reconvened here at Walt Disney World for the N.B.A.’s restart in July, they were not whole. Two players did not make the trip after testing positive for the coronavirus — Eric Bledsoe and Pat Connaughton eventually joined the team — but it seemed to foreshadow the challenges that loomed. The challenge of reassembling the unusual qualities that had made the Bucks such a special team before the season was suspended. The challenge of generating energy in a spectator-free bubble . The challenge of unearthing their chemistry after a four-and-a-half-month hiatus. And, of course, the challenge of shining a spotlight on social justice issues as the world watched. … [Read more...] about Basketball and Social Justice: Bucks Say ‘It’s Harder to Do Both’
The Milwaukee Bucks Are Back, but They’re Not Leaving Activism Behind
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — It is bound to be forgotten with time that the Milwaukee Bucks, determined as they were in their pursuit of social justice, merely wanted to forfeit a basketball game Wednesday. The Bucks initially believed that they could stage a one-game, spur-of-the-moment walkout, even during the N.B.A. playoffs, without far-reaching consequences. Let’s just say they underestimated the gravity of that stance. What is sure to be remembered as one of the most tumultuous weeks in league history all started with the Bucks refusing to emerge from their locker room to face the Orlando Magic. The 2019-20 Bucks are thus destined to be memorialized as the fed-up group that responded to a police shooting in their home state with a protest conceived minutes before a playoff game was set to tip-off. In that moment, Milwaukee unexpectedly brought the N.B.A.’s maiden summer postseason to a sudden halt — and ultimately forced players leaguewide to decide if they wanted to keep playing … [Read more...] about The Milwaukee Bucks Are Back, but They’re Not Leaving Activism Behind
