Up on Malabar Hill, in the midst of this teeming, polyglot metropolis, breezes off the Arabian Sea caress the bungalows of the rich and rustle into a 50-acre forest that has for centuries been the place where Parsis, followers of the ancient prophet Zoroaster, brought their dead to be devoured by vultures. Since the 17th century, Parsi descendants of the Persians who found religious freedom in India a millennium ago have carried their dead up Malabar Hill. And until a few years ago, more than 100 of the shambling, unkempt birds would watch from the treetops to see whether pallbearers forked left or right. Then the vultures would soar over the dense, tangled greenery to the walls of the chosen Tower of Silence, a stone amphitheater where the corpse was to be laid. Citing Doubt, Officials Free Woman Convicted in 4 Children’s Deaths in 2003
Two decades ago, Kathleen Folbigg was convicted of smothering all four of her young children. Australian tabloids called her the country’s worst female serial killer. But Ms. Folbigg, who was serving a 30-year term, insisted she was innocent. And in recent years, a growing number of scientists began to argue that she was telling the truth. Genetic evidence, they said, indicated that the children had very likely died of natural causes. On Monday, the attorney general of New South Wales, Michael Daley, announced that Ms. Folbigg, 55, had been given a full pardon and released from prison. He cited an official inquiry’s preliminary conclusion that there was “reasonable doubt” about her guilt. “What is the difference between today and what has transpired in the past is that new evidence has come to light,” Mr. Daley said. “It is appropriate that we do have the mechanisms to reconsider the source of questions in light of new evidence.” The Australian Academy of Science, which … [Read more...] about Citing Doubt, Officials Free Woman Convicted in 4 Children’s Deaths in 2003
David Toschi, 86, Detective Who Pursued the Zodiac Killer, Dies
David Toschi, a colorful San Francisco police detective who spent nine futile years as one of the principal investigators chasing the so-called Zodiac killer , died on Jan. 6 at his home in San Francisco. He was 86. His daughter Linda Toschi-Chambers said the cause was pneumonia. He also had longstanding heart problems, she said. The Zodiac case , which remains unsolved and continues to fascinate crime buffs, involved a string of murders in Northern California in 1968 and 1969. The killer sent taunting letters to newspapers, wrote messages in intricate code and otherwise tormented investigators. Officially, he is thought to have killed five people and wounded two others, although in one communication he put the number of victims at 37. That figure was discounted by the authorities, although some other crimes are thought to be linked to Zodiac. Mr. Toschi (TOSS-kee) became involved in the case in 1969 when a cabdriver named Paul Stine was murdered in the Presidio … [Read more...] about David Toschi, 86, Detective Who Pursued the Zodiac Killer, Dies

Sonic Boom Rocks Nation’s Capital As Fighter Jet Intercepts Plane That Later Crashed
A loud explosion which shook the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area Sunday was caused by fighter jets scrambled to intercept an unresponsive plane, authorities stated. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from an Air National Guard base near Atlantic City, New Jersey and two others took off from Joint Base Andrews after an unauthorized Cessna 560 Citation V aircraft made its way through DC and northern VA airspace, Fox News reported . In order to catch up with the unresponsive plane, pilots were authorized to travel at super sonic speeds, creating a sonic boom heard by residents throughout the region, a press release from NORAD stated . Pilots intercepted the Cessna at approximately 3:20 p.m. Sunday and found the pilot of the aircraft to be “unresponsive.” The Cessna later crashed near the George Washington National Forest in Northern Virginia, the release stated. close Video Florida alligator found wandering inside stormwater pipe, city says Crews in Oviedo, Florida, were investigating underground pipes for anomalies when their robotic camera ran into a 5-foot alligator. (Credit: City of Oviedo) Many residents in Guam are still struggling to recover from the damage left behind by Category 4 storm Typhoon Mawar. Mothers who gave birth during Typhoon Mawar are returning to homes without any electricity as only 28% of the island has power. Officials believe it will take 4 to 6 weeks for power to become fully restored in Guam. About a week after Typhoon Mawar tore through Guam as the strongest typhoon to hit the U.S. Pacific territory in over two decades, most of the island remained without electricity and the governor appealed for patience during a recovery process expected to take at least a month. Even though Mawar caused no deaths or catastrophic destruction , officials said that as of … [Read more...] about Born in a typhoon, many Guam newborns remain without electricity
