The subject of the work is death at an early age. And in one of the dark dramatic coincidences theater occasionally springs on us, its 35-year-old author died only weeks before its opening. Yet no one who attends Jonathan Larson's "Rent," the exhilarating, landmark rock opera at the New York Theater Workshop, is likely to mistake it for a wake. Indeed, this vigorous tale of a … [Read more...] about THEATER REVIEW;Rock Opera A la ‘Boheme’ And ‘Hair’

PUPPET FESTIVAL REVIEW; Stories With Good Spirits and Bad
See the article in its original context from September 23, 1998 Section Page Buy Reprints View on timesmachine TimesMachine is an exclusive benefit for home delivery and digital subscribers. The inventiveness of the storytelling in Ping Chong's ''Kwaidan,'' along with the extravagant art and artfulness of its set and the unfailing precision of four puppeteers manipulating scores of elaborately contrived and painted figures, bring cheering audiences to their feet at LaMama's large Annex, where it is being presented as part of the International Festival of Puppet Theater. Mr. Chong dramatizes three ghost stories from Lafcadio Hearn's collection, ''Kwaidan.'' In ''Jikininki,'' a traveling Buddhist monk seeking shelter at night in the village home of a man who has just died encounters a malevolent spirit (a jikininki) that devours the dead, and he discovers that the monster is the soul of an ancient monk being punished for worldly disbelief and is able to set the … [Read more...] about PUPPET FESTIVAL REVIEW; Stories With Good Spirits and Bad

A Queen’s Delusion and Defiance Opens the Met Season
Since arriving at the Metropolitan Opera as general manager in 2006, Peter Gelb has been angling to make the soprano Anna Netrebko a house prima donna in the old-world sense: a first among equals . On Monday night Mr. Gelb must have felt that the plan was working. To open the Met’s season, Ms. Netrebko sang the punishing title role of Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” in the company’s first production of this breakthrough Donizetti work from 1830. The extended last scene was the high point of Ms. Netrebko’s performance as the distraught British queen (based on the historic Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII). Having been falsely condemned for betraying her husband, Anna drifts in and out of sanity. Ms. Netrebko sang an elegantly sad aria with lustrous warmth, aching vulnerability and floating high notes. When the audience broke into prolonged applause and bravos, Ms. Netrebko seemed to break character and smile a couple of times, though her look could have been taken as … [Read more...] about A Queen’s Delusion and Defiance Opens the Met Season
