In 1970, Miles Davis released “Bitches Brew,” an album so musically daring that some critics and listeners didn’t know what to make of it. By then, the trumpeter’s ear had drifted from traditional jazz to edgier blends of funk and psychedelic rock; he wanted to craft an amorphous sound only loosely tethered to any genre. “Instances of subtlety and formal improvisational mastery come thick and fast,” the critic Carman Moore wrote of “Bitches Brew” in The Times upon its arrival. “It is all so strange and new and yet so comfortable.” Others weren’t sold. “With ‘Bitches Brew,’ Davis was firmly on the path of the sellout,” Stanley Crouch wrote in 1990. “It sold more than any other Davis album, and fully launched jazz-rock with its multiple keyboards, electronic guitars, static beats and clutter. CATSYS event highlights best of the best academically and athletically
It was a memorable night for Arizona Athletics as they hosted their first-ever CATSYS Award Banquet honoring all student-athletes on Wednesday in McKale Center. The student-athletes were welcomed to the event with a red carpet and live music by recording artist Kelley James. Former Arizona basketball player and current Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton hosted the event alongside Chris ‘Geeter’ McGee, an Emmy Award winning-anchor and host for the SpectrumSN and the Lakers’ pre- and post-game show. Both Walton and McGee shared their gratitude for being a part of the first-ever CATSYS and put on a show for the student-athletes. The award ceremony was the athletic department’s very own version of the ESPY Awards held yearly by ESPN. The “Convergence” exhibit opened on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Canessa Gallery in San Francisco. The opening reception was followed two weeks later by an evening of engaging presentations by the student artists. Both events drew a full house of attendees, along with a visit from a local art critic, putting an appropriate capstone on an impressive academic career for Lohmann, who has taught at CSM for 26 years and will retire at the end of the spring semester.
