Yesterday, Senate Republicans voted down a bill to strengthen the federal government’s ability to monitor domestic extremism . The practical implications of this legislative defeat are relatively modest. But it has much larger significance as another indicator of the Republican Party’s unwillingness to dislodge the faction of violent extremists that has gained a foothold on its right flank. In its substance, the bill consisted of a few modest provisions that until recently would have been unobjectionable. It would have established a new office to monitor and prosecute domestic terrorism in each of the FBI, the Justice Department, and the Department of Homeland Security. It would have required regular reporting on domestic terror threats as well as a focus on “white supremacist and neo-Nazi infiltration of the uniformed services.” It did not create new federal powers, define new crimes, or define additional groups as terrorist. In response to concerns from civil libertarians, it … [Read more...] about Republicans Block Bill to Monitor Their Violent Allies

New Law Puts NHL Great Konstantinov’s 24/7 Care In Jeopardy
WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (AP) — Vladimir Konstantinov has traded hockey sticks for an Uno deck. Many, in fact. The onetime Soviet and Detroit Red Wings star plays so often that he goes through a pack per week, wearing out cards with the hands that once made him one of the world’s best defensemen. Stores have too much stuff; Get ready for discounts
(CBS Boston) — Some welcome news for shoppers getting squeezed by inflation: promotions on televisions, furniture, clothing, sporting goods, and other big-ticket purchases are ramping up. Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Urban Outfitters, and other top retailers have said in recent weeks that they are sitting on too much inventory for some of their products. As a result, they plan to mark down prices and step up sales on those items to clear the glut. White House’s latest plan to forgive student debt drops amount significantly
WASHINGTON - White House officials are currently planning to cancel $10,000 in student debt per borrower, after months of internal deliberations over how to structure loan forgiveness for tens of millions of Americans, three people with knowledge of the matter said. President Biden had hoped to make the announcement as soon as this weekend at the University of Delaware commencement, the people said, but that timing has changed after the massacre Tuesday in Texas. The White House's latest plans called for limiting debt forgiveness to Americans who earned less than $150,000 in the previous year, or less than $300,000 for married couples filing jointly, two of the people said. It was unclear whether the administration will simultaneously require interest and payments to resume at the end of August, when the current pause is scheduled to lapse. The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deliberations, cautioned that some … [Read more...] about White House’s latest plan to forgive student debt drops amount significantly
Climate pressure from employees, shareholders rattles Big Oil
Five years ago, Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden sat down for an interview with The Washington Post and said "we believe that climate change is real. We believe that the threat of climate change is real. And we believe that action is needed." Then he added: "It doesn't mean we have to kiss hydrocarbons goodbye. In fact, we can't. But it does mean that we have to make more intelligent choices." Today, however, Shell and other oil companies are under fire from those who don't believe industry leaders are making intelligent choices. Dissident shareholders sought to use annual meetings to press their cases this week. And at Shell's annual meeting in London on Tuesday, dozens of climate activists wore "Christian Climate Action" T-shirts and rhythmically chanted "we will, we will stop you," forcing the company's chairman to halt the proceedings for over an hour. At the heart of the matter is the disagreement over the purpose of big oil and gas companies. Should they do further … [Read more...] about Climate pressure from employees, shareholders rattles Big Oil
Ray Liotta delivered one of cinema’s greatest breakout performances
"Hi, baby. Surprise." Those were the first words most people heard Ray Liotta speak, in Jonathan Demme's 1986 road trip comedy "Something Wild." At least, it was a road trip comedy until that moment. During the preceding hour, Lulu, played by Melanie Griffith, and Charlie (Jeff Daniels) seemed to be embarking on an eccentric picaresque about mismatched lovers taking a zany car ride from Manhattan through Pennsylvania. When Liotta's character - Lulu's ex-husband, coincidentally named Ray - showed up, the emotional weather changed in an instant. Staring down Lulu and Charlie with ice-blue eyes, his muscles bulging alarmingly under a black T-shirt, Ray injected real menace into a quirky romance that turned murderously ugly the moment he appeared on screen. Who is that guy? viewers immediately wondered about Liotta, who died at 67 on Thursday in the Dominican Republic, where he was filming a movie. (The cause is still being investigated.) "Something Wild" wasn't Liotta's screen … [Read more...] about Ray Liotta delivered one of cinema’s greatest breakout performances
