Bay Briefing: Will new COVID variants make the surge even worse?
Good morning, Bay Area. It’s Thursday, June 30, and we may finally find out today if the Oakland Athletics will be approved to move forward with their ballpark at Howard Terminal. Here’s what you need to know to start your day. Surge upon a surge? Before the current COVID surge, the Bay Area had been accustomed to the pandemic pattern where a rise in cases over several weeks was then followed by a short plateau and rapid drop. It’s now very clear: that isn’t playing out this time. Cases continue to rise in the Bay Area and across the nation, as two new highly infectious and immune-evasive coronavirus variants, BA.4 and BA.5, become dominant. These new variants could prolong the current surge or cause a fresh spike in cases, and they could apply pressure on health care systems frayed from nearly three years of pandemic stress. Just how bad could things get this time — and would mask mandates and other restrictions return? Erin Allday looks at what we know now . How to … [Read more...] about Bay Briefing: Will new COVID variants make the surge even worse?
Analysis: California has the highest share of residents who identify as LGBT
About 2.7 million or 9.1% of Californians identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender — the largest share of any highly populated state and one that is “considerably higher” than the national figure of 7.9%, according to a census data analysis published by the Public Policy Institute of California. Even the national figure is higher than estimates derived from other surveys. In February Gallup reported 7.1% of U.S. adults identify as LGBT — about double the percentage from 2012 when the firm first measured it. One possible reason for the difference, senior fellow Hans Johnson wrote in a post outlining his findings, was survey type. Gallup and others rely on phone calls, whereas the census used an online format, which may help survey takers feel more at ease when answering potentially sensitive questions. For his analysis, Johnson drew from the Census Bureau’s ongoing Household Pulse Survey, designed to measure household experiences with the pandemic. “In July 2021, for … [Read more...] about Analysis: California has the highest share of residents who identify as LGBT
Texas woman accused in professional cyclist’s death arrested in Costa Rica
A Texas woman suspected in the fatal shooting of professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson at an Austin home has been arrested in Costa Rica, the U.S. Marshals Service said Thursday. Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, was arrested Wednesday at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas, the Marshals Service said in a statement. Armstrong was expected to be returned to the United States, where she faces a murder charge, the agency said. “The Marshals Service elevated the Kaitlin Armstrong investigation to major case status early in this investigation, which likely played a key role in her capture after a 43-day run,” said U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas Susan Pamerleau. Wilson, 25, was found dead May 11, and Austin police on May 19 issued a murder warrant for Armstrong. Authorities said Armstrong sold her vehicle May 13, then flew from Austin to Houston shortly after being questioned that day by authorities about Wilson’s death. She then flew to New York … [Read more...] about Texas woman accused in professional cyclist’s death arrested in Costa Rica
California’s New Late Start Law Aims To Make School Less Of A Yawn
FREMONT (AP) – When Hansika Daggolu’s junior year of high school starts in the fall, she’ll be watching to see if a later first bell under a new California law means fewer classmates are heads-down on their desks for afternoon naps. The overall mood, she suspects, will lift as well if her classmates at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont aren’t quite so sleepy. READ MORE: CHP: DUI Suspect Crashes On I-80, Tries To Grab Officer’s Gun “I’m really excited and I am so happy this is happening,” said Hansika, 15, who said she will no longer have to get out of bed before 7 a.m. to get to school by 8 a.m. Beginning this fall high schools in the nation’s most populous state can’t start before 8:30 a.m. and middle schools can’t start before 8 a.m. under a 2019 first-in-the-nation law forbidding earlier start times. Similar proposals are before lawmakers in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Advocates say teens do better on school work when they’re more alert, and predict even broader … [Read more...] about California’s New Late Start Law Aims To Make School Less Of A Yawn
Romantic Rival Accused of Killing Cycling Star Finally Captured in Costa Rica
A Texas woman accused of fatally shooting a rising professional cyclist after becoming enraged over the woman’s previous relationship with her live-in boyfriend has been captured in Costa Rica after 43 days on the run. Kaitlin Marie Armstrong , the amateur cyclist and yoga teacher, faces charges for the May 11 killing of 25-year-old Anna Moriah Wilson , a Vermont native who was in Austin for an upcoming race. On Wednesday, after over a month on the run, Armstrong was captured at the Santa Teresa Beach hostel in Provincia de Puntarenas, officials said. Her arrest marks the end of a coordinated, multi-agency effort to track down the 34-year-old, whom authorities say carefully orchestrated a plan to go off the grid. Armstrong will now be deported and return to the United States to face charges related to Wilson’s death. Authorities say that two days after Wilson was found shot dead in an Austin apartment, Armstrong sold her black Jeep Grand Cherokee to a CarMax … [Read more...] about Romantic Rival Accused of Killing Cycling Star Finally Captured in Costa Rica
