On Aug. 30, the baseball world will mark the centennial birthday year of Ted Williams, generally regarded as "the greatest hitter who ever lived." In the following article, veteran sportswriter Garry Brown describes a close encounter with "The Splendid Splinter" and related memories of him. In August of 1963, the American Legion World Series came to Keene, New Hampshire, and one Theodore Samuel Williams came along with it. He was then in the third year of his retirement from an illustrious and often stormy career with the Boston Red Sox. His 19 years in the big leagues bore the marks of greatness - 521 homers, two Triple Crown seasons, two MVP awards and a lifetime batting average of .344. It was a career twice interrupted by wartime service as a Marine Corps pilot. Of course, his absolute highlight came in 1941, when he hit .406. Nobody has come close to a .400 season since. Even then he was someone “on whom nothing is lost,” he recalled.“I’m a poet of consciousness, of consciousness in the world, as it goes by,” he told the Rain Taxi Review of Books in 2005. “I’m a poet of attention to that world, attention by ear, attention by eye. By Fred L. Jones, Jr. Raymond S. McLain High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is one of the most challenging high school institutions in the state. McLain has a very high dropout and transfer rate. From the time a student enrolls as a freshman to the time he or she graduates, McLain will lose about 65 percent of those students. Teaching is a challenging profession at any school, but it takes a unique individual to teach at McLain. It truly takes a committed individual whose heart is truly for the students.
