Remembering Ted Williams, the ‘Splendid Splinter,’ on the centennial of his birth

August 26, 2018 by masslive Leave a Comment

On Aug. 30, the baseball world will mark the centennial birthday year of Ted Williams, generally regarded as "the greatest hitter who ever lived." In the following article, veteran sportswriter Garry Brown describes a close encounter with "The Splendid Splinter" and related memories of him. In August of 1963, the American Legion World Series came to Keene, New Hampshire, and one Theodore Samuel Williams came along with it. He was then in the third year of his retirement from an illustrious and often stormy career with the Boston Red Sox. His 19 years in the big leagues bore the marks of greatness - 521 homers, two Triple Crown seasons, two MVP awards and a lifetime batting average of .344. It was a career twice interrupted by wartime service as a Marine Corps pilot. Of course, his absolute highlight came in 1941, when he hit .406. Nobody has come close to a .400 season since. Throughout his career, he had a testy relationship with Boston sportswriters (he called them "the knights of … [Read more...] about Remembering Ted Williams, the ‘Splendid Splinter,’ on the centennial of his birth

Even then he was someone “on whom nothing is lost,” he recalled.“I’m a poet of consciousness, of consciousness in the world, as it goes by,” he told the Rain Taxi Review of Books in 2005. “I’m a poet of attention to that world, attention by ear, attention by eye. I write what I see and what I hear.”He wrote about writers and artists whose work he admired, about the landscape of his Vermont summer retreat, and about the streets of Boston, his home for more than 40 years. “Half moon over Fenway Park/over Vermont’s sawtooth trees,” Mr. Corbett began one poem, stitching together here and away in a single couplet. By Fred L. Jones, Jr. Raymond S. McLain High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is one of the most challenging high school institutions in the state.  McLain has a very high dropout and transfer rate.  From the time a student enrolls as a freshman to the time he or she graduates, McLain will lose about 65 percent of those students. Teaching is a challenging profession at any school, but it takes a unique individual to teach at McLain.  It truly takes a committed individual whose heart is truly for the students. Resha Williams Vo is one of those special people who has a heart for the community in which she was raised.  Williams Vo stated, “I am so honored to be named McLain High School teacher of the year for 2016/17.  Teaching at McLain is the greatest, most rewarding job I have ever had. I can truly say I am working at my dream job and, at the same time, giving back to my community and trying to make a difference.” Williams Vo attended Booker T.
