Sony Pictures apologized Sunday for making light of food allergies in the recent cartoon adaptation of the popular children’s book “Peter Rabbit” after parents complained. “Food allergies are a serious issue. Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s archenemy, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way,” Sony said in a statement after viewers complained and started an online petition objecting to the “allergy bullying.” “We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize.” One scene in “Peter Rabbit,” which took second place in box office earnings this weekend behind only the erotic sequel “Fifty Shades Freed,” shows the mischievous creatures inspired by the work of Beatrix Potter pelting their adversary Mr. McGregor with blackberries, even though the character is allergic. At one point, a berry lands in McGregor’s mouth and the man has to use an epinephrine pen to stave of … [Read more...] about Sony Apologizes For Depicting Food Allergies As Weakness In Kids Movie

Lauren Ambrose Just Wants to Go to French Clown School
“What creature is that?” Lauren Ambrose asked, craning her neck during a video interview from her home in the Berkshires. “I see this, like, crazy hawk sitting on a tree outside my window. It just caught my eye.” The setting was fitting, since Ambrose is about to become bonded with, and haunted by, the natural world. Joining the cast of “Yellowjackets,” Showtime’s thriller about a girls’ soccer team stranded in the wilderness and pushed to the extremes, she plays the adult version of Van, short for Vanessa, one of the lucky and savvy few to make it to middle age. Ambrose, who also stars in the Apple TV+ series “ Servant ,” was excited by the opportunity to help create a character (played in her teenage years by Liv Hewson) and by the women she said she’s grown up watching. “I love looking at the call sheet and seeing that the top chunk is all of these incredible women who I’ve admired and whose careers I’ve followed — who’ve influenced me so much as actors,” she said. … [Read more...] about Lauren Ambrose Just Wants to Go to French Clown School
Traces of Montana Oil Spill Are Found in Drinking Water
HELENA, Mont. — Work crews burrowed through thick ice and set up containment booms Tuesday in a struggle to vacuum up 50,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the Yellowstone River from a ruptured pipeline, contaminating drinking water. The 12-inch steel pipeline, which burst Saturday morning near Glendive, Mont., about 400 miles east of here, sent light crude oil flowing downstream as far as the confluence with the Missouri River, 60 miles away in North Dakota. Health officials warned people not to use tap water in Glendive and surrounding towns after traces of benzene from the leak were found in a water treatment plant. Gov. Steve Bullock visited the area on Monday and declared a state of emergency for Dawson and Richland Counties. The Bridger Pipeline Company, which operates the line, has shut it down, company officials said. The line is part of a system that passes across eastern Montana from the Canadian border. Federal officials have said short-term exposure to the … [Read more...] about Traces of Montana Oil Spill Are Found in Drinking Water
Comforting Syrian soup pulls almost everything from pantry
The Syrian soup shurba w’kibbeh is pure comfort food, a rustic mixture of meatballs and rice in a simple tomatoey broth that’s redolent with warm spices. It’s also a prime example of the complex flavor you can build by drawing on ingredients already in your pantry. This recipe from our book “Cook What You Have,” which draws on pantry staples to assemble easy, weeknight meals, requires just one refrigerated ingredient: ground beef (ground turkey works well, too). Also made with canned tomatoes, rice and boxed broth, the soup can be ready in about 40 minutes. Inspired by a recipe from “Aromas of Aleppo” by Poopa Dweck, we mix allspice and red pepper flakes into the meat mixture. You also could substitute cumin or cinnamon or combine them all for a slightly different flavor profile that would be no less traditional. The prep is easy, too. To boost the flavor of the meatballs and the broth, we grate onion and garlic so no knifework is required. What’s more, there’s no need to … [Read more...] about Comforting Syrian soup pulls almost everything from pantry
Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 OAKLAND, Calif. - For more than a decade, the district attorney for Alameda County, where this city is the center of gravity, prosecuted crime the old-fashioned way, with stiff sentences and the reliable support of law-enforcement unions at election time. That changed sharply in November. Nancy O'Malley, the incumbent, declined to seek reelection amid the strengthening national push to reexamine who is punished and for how long. In her place, voters chose Pamela Price, a civil rights lawyer, who four years and a pandemic earlier had lost her challenge to O'Malley. Now, a woman who made a living taking on the local justice system is running it. "They elected me with a mandate," Price, the first Black woman to serve as Oakland district attorney, said in an interview. "And, to me, the right prosecutor for the moment is one who is not wedded to the status quo." Price … [Read more...] about Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
