Despite nearly drowning in a pool when he was 3 or 4, the perfumer Barnabé Fillion tries to take a swim in Paris, where he’s based for part of each year, whenever he feels a headache coming on. “Water, for me, is a way to transform,” says Fillion, 41, who has synesthesia, a condition in which one’s senses are cross-wired: In Fillion’s case, he experiences images and sounds as textures. “If I’m really saturated, water will help me. There’s something about it that makes me feel light and happy and fuzzy.” His latest scent, Manta, is meant to evoke the sensation of being underwater. It’s the fourth fragrance from Arpa , the brand Fillion launched last year, its offerings recognizable by their colored glass bottles, which are handblown by the artist Jochen Holz . Unlike the line’s other scents, however, which were inspired by memorable destinations to which Fillion has traveled — the Dallol region of Ethiopia, a Belgian forest and the hot springs of … [Read more...] about For Barnabé Fillion, Fragrance Is a Multisensory Affair

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 26 MADRID (AP) — An unstable world could get even more dangerous if NATO does not remain strong and united, the head of the alliance said Thursday at the end of a summit where Western leaders labeled Russia “a direct threat” to the security of their nations. During their three-day meeting in Madrid, NATO members confronted a geopolitical landscape marked by big-power competition and myriad threats, from cyberattacks to climate change. The leaders cast their sights around the world —- drawing a rebuke after accusing China of posing “serious challenges ” to global stability. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine dominated the summit. “We live in a more dangerous world and we live in a more unpredictable world, and we live in a world where we have a hot war … [Read more...] about NATO vows to guard ‘every inch of territory’ as Russia fumes

Lewis Hamilton pushes back against ‘old voices’ over racism
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Lewis Hamilton said Thursday that Formula One should ignore “old voices” and reject racism as it focus on becoming more inclusive. Hamilton, the seven-time F1 champion and only Black driver, was reacting to comments made last year by three-time champion Nelson Piquet referring to Hamilton by a racial term. The word in question was brought to attention this week. Former longtime F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone defended Piquet on Thursday, said he was surprised Hamilton hadn't “brushed it aside," and expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. “I don’t know why we are continuing to give these older voices a platform because they’re speaking upon our sport and we’re looking to go somewhere completely different. And it’s not representative, I think, of who we are as a sport now and where we’re planning to … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton pushes back against ‘old voices’ over racism

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 32 MADRID (AP) — The Latest on the final day of the NATO summit in Madrid: Turkey’s president is hailing his country’s joint memorandum with Sweden and Finland over their NATO accession as a victory. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that all of Turkey’s “sensitivities” had been included in the 10-article agreement. The deal signed Tuesday removed Turkey’s objection to the Nordic countries’ NATO membership. But Erdogan added that if Sweden and Finland did not fulfill their promises, Turkey could still block their membership by not ratifying the deal in the Turkish parliament. Erdogan claimed after the NATO summit ended that Sweden had promised to extradite 73 “terrorists” to Turkey and crack down on … [Read more...] about Live updates | Turkey claims win in NATO deal on Nordics
Golfer Pat Perez on Joining LIV: ‘This Opportunity Is Like Winning the Lottery for Me’
Pro golfer Pat Perez is one of the first to admit that he quit the PGA Tour and joined the new LIV league because it is paying him more money. Perez drove the point home by wearing a shirt that featured a print of $100 bills Tuesday night at the LIV Golf Invitational Series welcome dinner in Portland, Oregon, the New York Post reported. But the 46-year-old pro also directly addressed the issue in comments that night. “For me, it’s real simple. I’m 46. I’ve played 515 events. I’ve been on the road since 1998. I’ve been on the road longer than Matt Wolff has been alive. I have an almost 4-year-old. I missed my son’s birth last year,” Perez told the media. “The bottom line is I’m tired of being on the road every day, and I don’t have to do it now. This opportunity [is] like winning the lottery for me,” he added. Brooks Koepka also commented this week on his decision to jump from the PGA Tour to the Saudi-backed LIV league and, like Perez, said that having more time off the … [Read more...] about Golfer Pat Perez on Joining LIV: ‘This Opportunity Is Like Winning the Lottery for Me’
