Colorado Attorney General Pushes New Law To Fight Fraud As State Doles Out Billions In Federal Aid Dollars
(CBS4) – Over the last couple of years, the State of Colorado has received about $12 billion in COVID relief and $6 billion in infrastructure funding. Much of the money will be dispersed in the form of grants for everything from transportation projects to affordable housing, making it a magnet for unscrupulous businesses and nonprofits. As they concoct schemes to cheat taxpayers, Attorney General Phil Weiser is one step ahead. “When massive amounts of money get spent, there’s always fraud,” said Weiser. Where others saw promise, Weiser saw peril. His office has recovered $12 million in Medicaid fraud alone in just the last couple of years. “But other fraud, where the government is on the hook, we haven’t had any tools,” he said. That’s because Colorado is one of the few states without a False Claims Act or a civil statute that allows prosecutors to recover tax dollars. Weiser can file criminal charges in some cases, but the standard of proof can be high. Biden White House seeks to turn page on Trump, focus on legislative priorities
WASHINGTON — The end of former President Trump’s impeachment trial opens a new chapter for his successor in the White House. But while President Biden and his team are eager to move past the impeachment, the bitterly partisan tone of the proceedings underscores the deep challenges ahead as the president and his party try to push forward their agenda and address historic crises. Biden, who was at the Camp David presidential retreat when the Senate voted Saturday to acquit Trump, had acknowledged that Democrats needed to hold the former president responsible for the siege of the U.S. Capitol but did not welcome the way it distracted from his agenda. The trial ended with every Democrat and seven Republicans voting to convict Trump, but the 57-43 vote was far from the two-thirds threshold required for conviction. Whether the seven GOP votes against Trump offered Biden any new hope for bipartisan cooperation within Congress remained an open question. In a statement, Biden … [Read more...] about Biden White House seeks to turn page on Trump, focus on legislative priorities
Judge dismisses Trump’s lawsuit, allowing NY probe to go on
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge on Friday dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James, allowing her civil investigation into his business practices to continue. In a 43-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Brenda Sannes said she based her decision on case law that, in most cases, bars federal judges from interfering in state-level investigations. Sannes’ ruling came a day after a New York appeals court ruled that Trump must answer questions under oath in James’ probe, upholding a lower-court ruling requiring him to sit for a deposition. “In a big victory, a federal court has dismissed Donald Trump’s baseless lawsuit to stop my office’s investigation into his and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings,” James said in a tweet. “Frivolous lawsuits won’t stop us from completing our lawful, legitimate investigation.” A message seeking comment was left with Trump's lawyers. Trump sued James in December, just after she issued a subpoena for his … [Read more...] about Judge dismisses Trump’s lawsuit, allowing NY probe to go on
Climate pressure from employees, shareholders rattles Big Oil
Five years ago, Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden sat down for an interview with The Washington Post and said "we believe that climate change is real. We believe that the threat of climate change is real. And we believe that action is needed." Then he added: "It doesn't mean we have to kiss hydrocarbons goodbye. In fact, we can't. But it does mean that we have to make more intelligent choices." Today, however, Shell and other oil companies are under fire from those who don't believe industry leaders are making intelligent choices. Dissident shareholders sought to use annual meetings to press their cases this week. And at Shell's annual meeting in London on Tuesday, dozens of climate activists wore "Christian Climate Action" T-shirts and rhythmically chanted "we will, we will stop you," forcing the company's chairman to halt the proceedings for over an hour. At the heart of the matter is the disagreement over the purpose of big oil and gas companies. Should they do further … [Read more...] about Climate pressure from employees, shareholders rattles Big Oil
