ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Power Co. wants to raise customer bills 12% over the next three years to pay for system improvements and higher costs and allow higher profits, the company said Friday in a rate filing with state regulators. The filing kicks off a rate case before the Georgia Public Service Commission, with the five commissioners likely to vote on the plan in December and new rates taking effect in January. Changes are likely before any vote. A residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month pays Georgia Power an average of $128 a month now, Chief Financial Officer Aaron Abramovitz said Friday. Under the plan, that would rise by $14.32 in 2023, reaching a total of $16.29 over the three-year period. But those aren't the only price increases Georgia Power's 2.3 million customers could face next year. The Public Service Commission has already approved plans for the company to increase rates by $3.78 a month as soon as the first of two new … [Read more...] about Georgia Power proposes 12% increase in bills, with 2023 leap

Opinion: My brother is serving 20 years in a Saudi prison. Biden should ask MBS for his release
Areej al-Sadhan is a Saudi-American human rights activist, American citizen and sister to Red Crescent humanitarian worker Abdulrahman al-Sadhan. The views expressed in this commentary are her own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) My brother Abdulrahman and I used to love to explore the Bay Area -- hiking, cycling and, on occasion, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge together. Regardless of the activity, I knew I could count on my brother to make me laugh and vice versa. As I look back on those adventures now, I wonder when I will hear my brother's laughter again. Areej al-Sadhan I have not seen or spoken to my brother in more than four years. Several weeks ago, he spent his 39th birthday behind bars in Saudi Arabia. It was the fifth birthday that my family and I have spent separated from him -- with little to no information about his health or wellbeing. This year, my brother's ongoing detention coincides with increased buzz … [Read more...] about Opinion: My brother is serving 20 years in a Saudi prison. Biden should ask MBS for his release
Despite title game, USFL already focusing on next season
The USFL accomplished what the last two attempts at spring football failed to do — make it through its first season. As the league prepares for Sunday night’s championship game between the Birmingham Stallions and Philadelphia Stars at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, where it goes from here is the bigger question. Fox Sports president Eric Shanks announced earlier this week that the USFL will return next season. Ratings have been steady, with games averaging 1.034 million viewers on Fox and NBC. The overall average is lower (715,000) when games on USA Network and FS1 are included. While those ratings are slightly above the 2019 Alliance of American Football, which ceased operations after eight weeks, they are behind the 2020 XFL viewership average of 1.9 million. The XFL ceased operations midway through its season, mostly due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I think we’ve said pretty consistently that the number one goal for this season was to establish that we … [Read more...] about Despite title game, USFL already focusing on next season

Ira Winderman: NBA free-agency period more about trade season for Heat
The most pressing question when it comes to Friday’s start of NBA free agency is . . . why? Arguably, with scant few exceptions, this year there is no there there. Yes, Bradley Beal will at least create the impression that he will explore options. Then he will re-sign with the Washington Wizards. All signs point in that direction. Yes, Deandre Ayton is the rare restricted free agent who could actually leave via an offer sheet. But even then, it appears there are few dance partners, particularly with the draft approach taken by the cap-flush Detroit Pistons. Yes, the New York Knicks will attempt to wildly overspend on Jalen Brunson, but even that will require additional cap gymnastics. And can the Chicago Bulls actually afford to allow Zach LaVine to bolt after he was the linchpin of the (still-painful) trade of Jimmy Butler? Otherwise, there are some intriguing names on the free-agent list, but also players whose ties are so strong to their current teams that the start … [Read more...] about Ira Winderman: NBA free-agency period more about trade season for Heat
Danny Mendick suffers a season-ending ACL tear, while the Chicago White Sox call up hot prospect Lenyn Sosa
Danny Mendick didn’t curse his luck. The Chicago White Sox infielder’s season came to end Thursday with news that he tore the ACL in his right knee, an injury suffered Wednesday in an outfield collision with Adam Haseley. “You know what, that ball was in no man’s land,” Mendick said while using crutches a few hours before the Sox opened a four-game against the Baltimore Orioles at Guaranteed Rate Field. “You’re going out, you’re trying to be aggressive. There’s nothing I would ever take back about it. I’m an aggressive player. I know Haseley is too. I talked to him about it. I wouldn’t change it. You go after the ball — that’s how it works. Maybe a little miscommunication, but that’s part of it.” The Sox, however, might curse their fortunes when it comes to keeping players healthy. In addition to Mendick, outfielder Adam Engel on Thursday was placed on the 10-day IL. Engel suffered a strained right hamstring one inning after Mendick went down during a 9-5 home loss to … [Read more...] about Danny Mendick suffers a season-ending ACL tear, while the Chicago White Sox call up hot prospect Lenyn Sosa
