LUCKNOW, India (AP) — A large row boat taking villagers to a festival capsized in a flooded river in northern India on Thursday, leaving at least three people dead and 16 others missing, police said. A strong wind rocked the boat, which was carrying about 30 people, police officer Mohammed Nisar said. Some passengers were able to swim to safety, he said. Rescuers recovered three bodies. Hopes of finding the missing alive were fading as darkness approached, he said. The villagers were traveling to a nearby village in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh state to celebrate a Hindu festival. The area is about 250 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of Lucknow, the state capital. Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in northern India during the June-September monsoon season. Boating accidents are common in the country, where many vessels are overcrowded and have inadequate safety equipment. In September 2020, 12 people drowned when a sightseeing boat capsized on the swollen … [Read more...] about Row boat capsizes in Indian river; 3 dead, 16 missing

Ricky Gervais Calls On Northbrook Nature Preserve To Release Coyote
0 Community Corner "Rocky," a 4-year-old coyote, has been housed at the River Trail Nature Center since 2018 after being mistaken for a dog. Eric DeGrechie , Patch Staff Posted Reply NORTHBROOK, IL — Ricky Gervais has a long history of being involved with animal rights and advocacy. Earlier this week, the actor and comedian expressed his concerns about the well-being of a coyote living at the River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook. Gervais is backing the efforts of In Defense of Animals and the Chicago Alliance for Animals, two animal protection organizations working to get the coyote released from River Trail. "Rocky should not suffer the consequences of human error — it's not his fault that people mistook him for a German Shepard puppy," Gervais said in a statement and on social … [Read more...] about Ricky Gervais Calls On Northbrook Nature Preserve To Release Coyote

A Glimpse Inside a Florentine Silk-Weaving Workshop
In a quiet corner of the bohemian district of San Frediano, hidden behind an 18th-century iron gate that opens onto a whimsical wisteria-covered alleyway, lies a Florentine cultural treasure: the Antico Setificio Fiorentino , or Antique Florentine Silk Mill, which has been producing precious textiles since 1786. To enter through the atelier’s large, worn timber door is to slip back through time and revisit the enchantment and beauty of a more opulent era. Inside, 18th- and 19th-century timber and iron looms, some towering over 16 feet tall, clatter furiously in rhythm with tens of thousands of luminous silk threads, weaving warp and weft yarns into sumptuous fabrics, guided by the skilled hands of a select team of expert artisans. Since moving to Italy in 2003, I’ve grown increasingly fascinated with the country’s highly talented artisans, their intriguing workshops and the quality of their products, particularly in the Tuscan capital of Florence. When I … [Read more...] about A Glimpse Inside a Florentine Silk-Weaving Workshop
