WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health regulators on Tuesday approved the first gene therapy for hemophilia, a $3.5 million one-time treatment for the blood-clotting disorder. The Food and Drug Administration cleared Hemgenix, an IV treatment for adults with hemophilia B, the less common form of the genetic disorder which primarily affects men. Currently, patients receive frequent, expensive IVs of a protein that helps blood clot and prevent bleeding. Drugmaker CSL Behring announced the $3.5 million price tag shortly after the FDA approval, saying its drug would ultimately reduce health care costs because patients would have fewer bleeding incidents and need fewer clotting treatments. The price appeared to exceed that of several other gene therapies priced upwards of $2 million. Like most medicines in the U.S., most of the cost of the new treatment will be paid by insurers — not patients — including private plans and government programs. After decades of research, gene therapies have … [Read more...] about $3.5M gene therapy for hemophilia gets FDA approval

Four national medical associations and four doctors are suing the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for “illegally” approving abortion drugs that they claim harm women, according to a federal lawsuit filed Friday. The groups, represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, are claiming that, “the FDA failed America’s women and girls when it chose politics over science and approved chemical abortion drugs for use in the United States.” (RELATED: Man No Longer Considering Medically-Assisted Suicide Over Poverty Issues After Outpour Of Support) The lawsuit alleges that the FDA had to designate pregnancy as an “illness” and the abortion drugs as providing a “meaningful therapeutic benefit” in order to get them approved so rapidly. Our new lawsuit is a culmination of decades-long efforts by our clients to hold the FDA accountable for its irresponsible actions. The medical guidance was direct. Eleven-year-old Emma Basques had identified as a girl since toddlerhood. Now, as she worried about male puberty starting, a Phoenix pediatrician advised: Take a drug to stop it. At 13, Jacy Chavira felt increasingly uncomfortable with her maturing body and was beginning to believe she was a boy. Use the drug, her endocrinologist in Southern California recommended, and puberty would be suspended. An 11-year-old in New York with deepening depression expressed a desire to no longer be a girl. A therapist told the family the drug was the preteen’s best option, and a local doctor agreed. “‘Puberty blockers really help kids like this,’” the child’s mother recalled the therapist saying. “It was presented as a tourniquet that would stop the hemorrhaging.” As the number of adolescents who identify as transgender grows, drugs known as puberty blockers have become the first line of intervention for the youngest ones seeking medical treatment. Their … [Read more...] about They paused puberty, but is there a cost?
(BPT) - Each phase of life provides an opportunity to find new things that provide a sense of purpose, activities that get us up in the morning and bring fulfillment. Beyond the feeling, there is mounting evidence that shows a higher sense of purpose in life is associated with a lower risk of chronic conditions. Intentionally fostering a sense of purpose is especially important as we age and the things that once kept us going no longer require our attention, like a job or raising children. Fortunately, many things can deliver a sense of purpose, and they don’t need to be exotic or extravagant. They need only capture your interest and keep you motivated, giving you an extra push to overcome any obstacle that might arise. With the results of a recent national AARP Services survey as inspiration, here are five ways to do just that. Your AARP member benefits give you access to products and services that you can use to foster your purpose. 1. Puberty blockers are widely touted by doctors and transgender activists as a safe and fully reversible way to pause puberty for children with gender identity issues, but a growing body of evidence is challenging those claims, according to The New York Times. The drug prevents the surge in bone density that would normally occur during puberty, and patients can see lifelong bone issues that are never resolved, according to the Monday NYT article. Medical professionals are also challenging claims that the drug is reversible, arguing instead that blocking puberty permanently cements a child’s transgender identity and puts them on a path to lifelong biomedical intervention. “There’s going to be a price,” said Dr. Sundeep Khosla, who leads a bone research lab at the Mayo Clinic. “And the price is probably going to be some deficit in skeletal mass.” Some doctors argue that patients catch up on bone density after going off puberty blockers, but studies have shown that this isn’t … [Read more...] about ‘There’s Going To Be A Price’: Growing Body Of Evidence Disputes Claims That Puberty Blockers Are Safe, Reversible
The year is 2050. You’re prepping the house for another chaotic Thanksgiving with your kids, in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even a few friends. As you run through the recipe list for the big day, your heart jumps into your throat when it occurs to you: You forgot to buy the turkey. But, the worry quickly dissipates and you roll your eyes at your own forgetfulness. After all, that’s not something you have to worry about anymore. In fact, no one has to worry about running out to grab a frozen bird from the grocery store—not since we started making turkey meat in factories.
