A new bill introduced this week seeks to control the explosion of feral pigs in California, or what some are calling a ticking "swine bomb," by minimizing hunting restrictions on wild hogs and banning the release of pigs into the wild. The population of feral pigs in California has rapidly increased in recent decades. The Atlantic reported in 2020 that there are as many as 9 million feral swine in the U.S., with their population expanding from 17 to 39 states in under 30 years. The surge in the wild pig population is causing wide-ranging problems, from ransacked lawns in San Jose (where one city council member proposed allowing the use of bows and arrows to hunt them), to herds of pigs running rampant through Corona streets. If approved, Senate Bill 856 , introduced by Napa-area State Sen. Bill Dodd, would allow an owner or tenant in possession of a $15 "wild pig validation" to kill any feral pig destroying property or "injuring, molesting, pursuing, worrying, or … [Read more...] about The population of feral pigs has exploded in California. In early April, Edna McCloud woke up to find her hands tied to her hospital bed. She had spent the past four days on a ventilator in a hospital in St. Louis County, Mo., thrashing and kicking under sedation as she battled a severe case of Covid-19. “They told me, ‘You were a real fighter down there,’” recalled Ms. McCloud, a 68-year-old African-American retiree with a history of diabetes and heart problems. She weighed close to 300 pounds when she caught the coronavirus , which ravaged her lungs and kidneys. Nearly six months later, she feels proud to have pulled through the worst. “They said people with the conditions I have, normally, this goes the other way,” she said. As rates of obesity continue to climb in the United States, its role in Covid-19 is a thorny scientific question. A flurry of recent studies has shown that people with extra weight are more susceptible than others to severe bouts of disease. And experiments in animals and human cells have … [Read more...] about Studies Begin to Untangle Obesity’s Role in Covid-19
0 Politics & Government The new president sacrificed bold executive action to try to win over Congress. High Country News , News Partner Posted Reply By Jonathan Thompson , High Country News Jan. 20, 2022 When President Joe Biden first sat down in the Oval Office a year ago, the nation's environmental regulatory framework was in shambles. His predecessor, Donald Trump, had put tremendous energy into shrinking national monuments, eviscerating environmental protections and removing so-called "regulatory burdens" from the back of extractive industries. As a lame duck, Trump intensified his environmental rampage by selling drilling rights in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, removing critical habitat protections for the northern spotted owl, allowing industry to kill migratory birds without consequence, approving a four-lane highway through a southwestern Utah desert and finalizing a deal that handed over Apache … [Read more...] about Biden’s ‘Herky-Jerky’ First Year On Western Issues
It’s usually the images of a violent mob attacking the U.S. Capitol that are associated with the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election. But as more financial records become public, another image is emerging—of billionaires in MAGA gear writing large checks. And one billionaire in particular. Among the ranks of “dark money” groups and anonymous megadonors who bankrolled the effort is a familiar name in GOP fundraising circles: Dick Uihlein, founder of the multinational Uline shipping company. According to previously unreported tax disclosures , Uihlein’s nonprofit—the Ed Uihlein Family Foundation—poured millions of dollars in 2020 into a sprawling number of groups connected to efforts to challenge Joe Biden’s victory and reimagine election law, as well as other right-wing extremist organizations, including ones designated as hate groups. And the money is pure Uihlein—the foundation’s $16.8 million in 2020 donations came exclusively from Dick Uihlein … [Read more...] about New Filings Reveal Another Billionaire Behind the Big Lie
Apparently, I’m sitting in Joe DiMaggio’s seat. “He used to come in with his buddy a couple times a week, used to sit there and drink Michelob draft,” says Arnie Prien, the 79-year-old owner of The Final Final — a San Francisco bar nearly as loved as its most famous native son. The Yankee Clipper, who grew up in North Beach and moved back to the city (along with Marilyn Monroe) following his retirement in 1951, lived at 2150 Beach St., exactly six blocks from the bar. “That’s his corner,” Arnie says, motioning to a small framed photo gallery right next to Final Final’s entrance. “But I didn’t put that up until he passed away.” Arnie sits across from me — an absolute tank of a man — almost reluctantly motioning toward other stools. Over there is where Golden State Warriors superstar Klay Thompson had drinks with some friends right before the pandemic. And that’s where actor Matt Damon drank beers in the movie “Hereafter.” (You can spot Arnie’s bald head behind the bar 1:20:38 … [Read more...] about The no-frills San Francisco sports bar where pro athletes and celebrities rub elbows with 49ers fans
