TOKYO — To understand how Japan has fared better than most of the world in containing the dire consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, consider Mika Yanagihara, who went shopping for flowers this past week in central Tokyo. Even when walking outside in temperatures in the mid-90s, she kept the lower half of her face fully covered. “People will stare at you,” Yanagihara, 33, said, explaining why she did not dare take off her mask. “There is that pressure.” Japan’s COVID death rate, just one-twelfth of that in the United States, is the lowest among the world’s wealthiest nations. With the world’s third-largest economy and 11th-largest populace, Japan also tops global rankings in vaccination and has consistently had one of the globe’s lowest infection rates. Although no government authority has ever mandated masks or vaccinations or instituted lockdowns or mass surveillance, Japan’s residents have largely evaded the worst ravages of the virus. Instead, in many ways, Japan let … [Read more...] about Japan’s Secret to Taming the Coronavirus: Peer Pressure

Illegal Boat Migrant Crossings Hit Highest Monthly Total for the Year
Illegal migrant crossings of the English Channel have hit their highest monthly total for the year as people-smuggling efforts ramped up during the warmer weather. A total of 3,136 illegal migrants in 76 boats landed on British shores in the month of June, the highest total for a month so far this year, according to analysis from the PA News Agency as reported by ITV News. June’s crossings take the known total for the year to 12,690, more than five times the number that had crossed at this point of the year in 2020 (2,493) and over double that recorded in the first six months of last year (5,917). Crossings of the English Channel from France typically ramp up during the late summer and autumn amid calmer conditions on the busy waterway, with the highest monthly total being recorded in November of last year when 6,971 migrants were brought ashore. The pace of boat landings is on track to meet the prediction of 65,000 migrant arrivals by the end of the year, though some have … [Read more...] about Illegal Boat Migrant Crossings Hit Highest Monthly Total for the Year

Haywood Highsmith begins earning his keep for summer Heat
There were no guarantees when Haywood Highsmith reported for summer-league duty with the Miami Heat this past week in San Francisco. Now, there is an investment. Without a move by the team by Friday’s deadline, Highsmith received a $50,000 guarantee toward his $1.8 million 2022-23 salary. Added by the Heat amid the team’s COVID breakout in December and then brought back for the balance of the season in February, Highsmith is with the team’s roster for summer leagues this month in San Francisco and Las Vegas. His next guarantee date is opening night of the regular season, when an additional $400,000 of his salary would be guaranteed. Having previously spent time with the Philadelphia 76ers and their G League affiliate, Highsmith, at 6 feet 6, is being tested as an undersized power forward. For now, he is letting the financial aspects take care of themselves, as he works toward a roster spot while also mentoring the younger players on the team’s summer roster. “To be … [Read more...] about Haywood Highsmith begins earning his keep for summer Heat
