Republicans in Congress: Hearings? What Hearings?
The sixth and latest hearing from the House’s Jan. 6 Committee was, undoubtedly, its biggest blockbuster yet. But where one audience saw a Watergate-level historic event in former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony , another key audience likely saw... nothing. Amid the cable TV and social media frenzy that unfolded before, during, and after Hutchinson’s testimony, Republican members of Congress were largely silent. One reason why is hardly a secret: When it comes to Jan. 6, silence has always been the safest political option for the vast majority of Republicans. Another reason, though, has been less explored. GOP lawmakers have not really been paying close attention to the hearings, if they’ve been paying attention at all. Over the first two weeks of the select committee’s public hearings , The Daily Beast asked a dozen Republican congressmen and senators—staunch Trump critics, MAGA faithful, and those somewhere in between—if they had been watching any of … [Read more...] about Republicans in Congress: Hearings? Czech Republic to extend coal mining amid high demand
PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic has decided to reverse plans to halt mining in a key black coal region to help the country safeguard its power supply amid high demand and the energy crunch prompted by the Russia's war in Ukraine. Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura said Thursday that the state-owned OKD company will extend its mining activities in north-eastern Czech Republic until at least the end of next year, with an analysis to be made on a possible further extension until 2025. The original plans called for mining to be halted there this year, but “demand for black coal is enormous,” Stanjura said. Some other European Union countries are turning back to coal as a replacement for reduced deliveries of Russian natural gas, threatening climate goals in Europe. Russia has trimmed gas flows to EU countries like Germany, Italy and Austria on top of its gas cutoffs to France, Poland, Bulgaria and others. OKD's chief executive, Roman Sikora, said the Czech company was planning to … [Read more...] about Czech Republic to extend coal mining amid high demand
India has become a U.S. partner in countering China — a limited partner, that is
WASHINGTON — For more than two decades, American presidents have invested high hopes in a deepening U.S. relationship with India, the world’s largest democracy — as they almost invariably mention. And at first glance, India looks like a natural U.S. ally, not only an electoral democracy but a rapidly growing economy that fears the expanding power of China. Last year, President Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in Washington and declared a “global strategic partnership” — not quite a formal alliance, but the next best thing. Politics Essential Politics: The one word that best describes California How did California become the most populous, diverse, economically dynamic and confounding state in the union? A new book takes a stab at examining that question. Then Russia invaded Ukraine, and suddenly all those promises of partnership began to appear shaky. 1 Business The 46 Kohl's stores in Michigan may be in store for a change. The brand is in exclusive negotiations with a potential new owner. Shannon Antinori , Patch Staff Posted Reply MICHIGAN — The 46 Kohl's stores in Michigan could soon see some changes. Kohl's — which said this year that it's evolving from a department store to more of a lifestyle concept — is in negotiations with Vitamin Shoppe owner Franchise Group, Inc. that could determine the fate of the chain. As part of a three-week exclusive negotiation period, Franchise Group is seeking to acquire Kohl’s for $60 per share, a move that would put Kohl's value at around $8 billion. The acquisition talks come as the future of the Kohl’s brand remains undecided. In December, New York-based hedge fund Engine Capital urged the company to consider a sale, according to CNBC.
