Despite some “headwinds” including an unusually strong dollar, a lighter-than-usual release schedule and several short-term expenses, Warner Music posted a solid third quarter of 2022, with a strong showing from its publishing division and 12% revenue growth that the company stressed would have been closer to 15% if not for the above factors. The company also announced a new deal with Meta (formerly Facebook) and several upcoming legal settlements that it says will bring in $25 million in OBITDA, both of which will have a strong impact on Q4. “We delivered solid double-digit growth on a constant-currency basis, even against the backdrop of a slowdown in the advertising market and some one-time items affecting year-over-year comparisons,” said Steve Cooper, CEO, Warner Music Group . “In June, we saw the beginning of a new wave of amazing releases and we’re looking forward to a strong end to our fiscal year. Long term, we have the scale to … [Read more...] about Powered by Publishing, Warner Music Posts $1.42 Billion in Revenue for Third Quarter

A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000
London (CNN Business) Nearly one third of households in the United Kingdom will face poverty this winter after paying energy bills that are set to soar again in January, campaigners say. About 10.5 million households will be in fuel poverty for the first three months of next year, according to estimates from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition (EFPC) published on Tuesday — meaning that their income after paying for energy will fall below the poverty line. The UK government defines poverty as household income of less than 60% of the UK median, which stood at £31,000 ($37,500) in 2021, according to official statistics. The predictions are based on new estimates from research firm Cornwall Insight, also published Tuesday, which show that the average household energy bill is expected to hit £3,582 ($4,335) a year from October, and £4,266 ($5,163) from January — equating to about £355 ($430) a month. January's forecast represents a 116% increase in … [Read more...] about A third of Brits face poverty with energy bills set to hit $5,000
Yuh-Line Niou on Her Especially Personal Run for Congress
Photo: Ron Adar/SOPA Images/Shutterstock Yuh-Line Niou is used to running in a crowd. In 2016, she defeated five other candidates to win the Democratic nomination for the Assembly seat vacated by Speaker Sheldon Silver when he was indicted on corruption charges. Six years later, she is running for Congress against a dozen other candidates, including fellow front-runners City Councilwoman Carlina Rivera , former House impeachment counsel Dan Goldman, and Representative Mondaire Jones, in the newly redrawn Tenth District . It includes Chinatown and the Lower East Side, which she represents in Albany. If she wins, 39-year-old Niou — whose parents emigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan when she was a child — would become only the second Asian American elected to Congress from New York, after Grace Meng. She has been endorsed by progressive heavyweights like the Working Families Party and the Sunrise Movement, as well as by some of her fellow state lawmakers, like progressives Julia … [Read more...] about Yuh-Line Niou on Her Especially Personal Run for Congress
Ukraine Claims Responsibility for Massive Blasts at Russian Base in Crimea Despite Kremlin’s Story
Questions have been raised about the Kremlin’s version of events after several massive explosions were seen erupting from a Russian military airbase in Crimea on Tuesday. Videos of the blasts at the Saki base on the Russian-controlled peninsula were shared on social media. In a statement, the Russian defense ministry said the explosions had been caused as a result of aviation munitions detonating, though no explanation was given as to what had caused the ordnance to explode. They also claimed that there were no casualties as a result of the explosions, nor was there any damage to aviation hardware at the site. “Measures are being taken to extinguish the fire and find out the causes of the explosion,” the ministry added, Russian state media reported. “According to a report from the site, there was no fire impact on the bunded ammunition storage area at the airfield.” Despite the Kremlin’s denials, a contradictory narrative quickly emerged. An unnamed Ukrainian military official … [Read more...] about Ukraine Claims Responsibility for Massive Blasts at Russian Base in Crimea Despite Kremlin’s Story
Amnesty International Apologizes for Report on Ukraine Harming Civilians
Amnesty International (AI) said on Sunday that it “deeply regrets the distress and anger” caused by a press release last Thursday in which the group accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately endangering civilians by exposing them to Russian attacks. “Amnesty International has been rigorously documenting and reporting on war crimes and violations committed in Ukraine, speaking to hundreds of victims and survivors whose stories illuminate the brutal reality of Russia’s war of aggression. We have challenged the world to demonstrate its solidarity with Ukrainians through concrete action, and we will continue to do so,” AI said on Sunday. The group said that its press release on August 4, headlined “Ukrainian Fighting Tactics Endanger Civilians,” was unduly harsh on the Ukrainian military. There was nothing terribly ambiguous about the accusations AI leveled against the Ukrainians last week: Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm’s way by establishing … [Read more...] about Amnesty International Apologizes for Report on Ukraine Harming Civilians
