Photo: Getty Images/Getty Images It’s reasonable to be worried about a recession. Banks have been failing , offices are closing , and it’s not like anything has been getting cheaper . Still, you have people like Neel Kashkari , the CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, saying that the economy is fine, that no downturn is on the horizon. It is all very confusing. When good data does come along, it seems to come with an asterisk. On Wednesday, the federal government released new information on the amount of jobs out there, and it was pretty great. Not only are businesses still hiring like crazy, they actually increased the total number of job listings in April. There were 10.1 million openings last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — nearly two for each of the 5.8 million unemployed. People are still quitting jobs for better ones, and fewer people are getting laid off. Good, right? Actually — this news sucked, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average … [Read more...] about How to Navigate the Bizarro Economy

‘Mourning Lincoln’ and ‘Lincoln’s Body’
Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865, of a gunshot wound to the head. He was 56 years old and 6 feet 4 inches tall: a giant, felled. He was the 16th president of the United States and the first one killed in office. (A madman once tried to shoot Andrew Jackson, but both of his pistols misfired.) An assassination is treason by way of murder. Lincoln’s assassination was more — an act of war. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. Lincoln was the last of the Union dead. His death had another meaning, too. It founded a civic religion, dedicated to the memory of Lincoln’s sacrifice and to the proposition that emancipation is redemption. What became of Lincoln began with an act of hatred. On April 11, John Wilkes Booth said, while listening to Lincoln deliver a speech about the terms of the victory, “That means nigger citizenship.” Booth shot Lincoln with a derringer at about 10:15 p.m. on April 14 — Good Friday — in Ford’s Theater, six blocks from the White House. A 23-year-old Army … [Read more...] about ‘Mourning Lincoln’ and ‘Lincoln’s Body’
‘Dykes to Watch Out For,’ Now Holding Forth in Your Headphones
Over the past few weeks, Mallory Pearson, a 26-year-old writer and graphic designer living in Brooklyn, and her roommate, a tattoo artist, have been reading through Alison Bechdel’s beloved comic “Dykes to Watch Out For .” The series, which ran from 1983 to 2008, rings true as ever to the pair. “We read something together, literally the other day, and were laughing about how accurate it is,” Ms. Pearson said. They read jokes about feeling unprepared for a date, and story lines about the insularity of lesbian friend groups. “Seeing how that hasn’t changed at all is hilarious to me,” she added. On Thursday, “Dykes to Watch Out For” was reborn in a surprising medium: an audio series from Audible , adapted by the playwright Madeleine George. Carrie Brownstein plays the verbose polemicist Mo, and Roberta Colindrez voices Lois, a full-time flirt. They’re joined by others, including Roxane Gay, as Jezanna, and Jane Lynch, who narrates the series. This month marks 40 years since Ms. … [Read more...] about ‘Dykes to Watch Out For,’ Now Holding Forth in Your Headphones
‘Prayer for the French Republic’ Transferring to Broadway
Joshua Harmon’s “Prayer for the French Republic,” a play about a family grappling with contemporary and historical antisemitism in France, will transfer to Broadway this winter. The play will be produced by the nonprofit Manhattan Theater Club, which last year presented the play's first run Off Broadway . The production will be directed by David Cromer, who also directed it Off Broadway; it will be staged at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater, with previews beginning Dec. 19 and the opening scheduled for Jan. 9. Casting has not been announced. The production comes as concerns about antisemitism have been on the rise in the United States and beyond. Last season featured two shows about antisemitism — the play “Leopoldstadt,” about a Viennese family before, during, and after the Holocaust, and the musical “Parade,” about the lynching of a Jewish businessman in Georgia — both of which are leading contenders for Tony Awards this spring. “Prayer for the French Republic” will be … [Read more...] about ‘Prayer for the French Republic’ Transferring to Broadway

THERE comes a time when a satirical writer, if he's really out for blood, must stop clowning around and move in for the kill. That unmistakable moment of truth arrives about halfway through ''The Colored Museum,'' the wild new evening of black black humor at the Public Theater. In a sketch titled ''The Last Mama-on-the-Couch Play,'' the author, George C. Wolfe, says the unthinkable, … [Read more...] about STAGE: ‘COLORED MUSEUM,’ SATIRE BY GEORGE C. WOLFE
