Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats pushed their flagship climate change and health care bill toward House passage Friday, placing President Joe Biden on the brink of a back-from-the-dead triumph on his leading domestic goals that the party hopes will energize voters going into November’s elections. The narrowly divided House was poised to approve the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats were thirsty to declare victory on top-tier goals such as providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies and show they can wring accomplishments out of a frequently gridlocked Washington that disillusions many voters. WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Friday passed a sweeping healthcare, tax and climate change bill. Now they have to sell it. The vote was 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting in favor and all Republicans opposing it. With the midterm elections quickly approaching, congressional Democrats have had a series of legislative victories in recent weeks — expanding NATO, securing healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits, investing nearly $53 billion into the U.S. semiconductor industry and passing bipartisan gun safety legislation. That momentum has culminated in the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, an offshoot of the many versions of President Biden’s failed Build Back Better Act. The Inflation Reduction Act, which the Senate passed Sunday with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking a tie, now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature. With Biden poised to sign the bill into law in the coming days, House Democrats say their focus should now … [Read more...] about House Democrats pass sweeping healthcare, tax and climate bill
Elena Durante said stepping into her father’s store as a child overwhelmed her senses. Growing up in the family-run grocery business that sold everything from fine wines and olive oils to salt cod and big wheels of cheese, she described the sweet and peppery aromas of imported spices and remembers running her little fingers through barrels of dry beans. “There were so many products here in the ’60s. You’d smell every kind of spice,” she said. “I remember my dad coming home at night in his delivery van, and you couldn’t really get the smell of Ratto’s out of it. I can’t really describe it. Think of it as cheesy, fishy, briny, umami-ish.” Durante is the great-granddaughter of Giovanni Battista Ratto, the founder of the premier Oakland grocer, and the man behind its namesake since 1897. As a fourth-generation owner, she took over the business in 2002 from her father, Martin Durante, who had inherited Ratto’s in the ’50s from his own father, who was also named Martin Durante. … [Read more...] about Oakland deli with rich family history serves the tastiest cheap sandwiches
The House on Friday passed the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which, unlike its moniker, would not reduce inflation, and instead spends hundreds of billions of dollars on climate change and Obamacare programs. The House passed the legislation along partisan lines, 220-207. The vote featured no Democrats voting against the bill and no Republicans voting for the bill. This includes Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a swing district Democrat who voted against the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Act. Breitbart News reported on Thursday that House Republican leadership would whip Republicans against the legislation to ensure that zero Republicans vote for the bill. Since the legislation uses budgetary reconciliation, Republicans cannot stop Democrats from passing the bill; however, one senior House Republican staffer explained that they plan on making Democrats “own” the bill, which includes highlighting the deleterious effects of the bill. The legislation would: … [Read more...] about Congress Passes $700 Billion ‘Inflation Reduction’ Act

President Barack Obama never missed a chance to talk about his environmental record. From his clean power plan to the Paris climate accord to emissions limits on vehicles, he made environmental policy a priority of his administration. Most of his environmental policy however, centered around his view of carbon dioxide as the most dangerous pollutant the United States produces. Climate change alarmism in the Democratic Party has deep roots, but the rise of a presidential candidate who made it such a major part of his platform, Al Gore, cemented climate change as a Democratic sacrament. If you disagreed with the Obama administration’s prioritization of carbon, but still consider yourself an environmentalist, then you may have an ally in the White House — President Trump himself. Carbon-centric energy and environmental policy is a black hole. Because of the gravity of the problem according to climate alarmists, the mitigation of climate change overwhelms any other environmental … [Read more...] about Is Donald Trump Making America’s Environment Great Again?
