Half a dozen years ago — just before Donald Trump latched on to the birther issue, but when the conservative base was already erupting in racialized terror against President Obama — The Simpsons slyly satirized Fox News with a pretend slogan: “NOT RACIST, BUT #1 WITH RACISTS.” The first part was probably too kind to a network that has frequently stoked white racial paranoia (and just last week had a prominent host lashing out at Michelle Obama for pointing out that the White House was built by slaves). But it perfectly describes most of the elite of the Republican Party. Within the Grand Old Party, open racism is extremely rare. Far more common is denial of the persistence of racism in American life, a willingness to pursue policies that disadvantage nonwhites, and a refusal to jeopardize the party’s support among racists. Donald Trump has pulled the cloak away, leaving the party’s alliance with racism exposed for all to see. … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Gave Republicans the Choice of Racism or Defeat. Along with these lukewarm appeals to the center of the electorate, Trump doled out hot slabs of red meat to the Republican donor class. The GOP nominee called for repealing “the death tax,” which is to say the tax on the estates of multimillionaires. There is no public interest in repealing this tax, unless one believes that the American economy is currently plagued by too little inequality. "The radical left entirely controls Joe Biden and the party. And let's not kid ourselves. I think you've pointed it out more than clearly," Trump Jr. told Hannity. Pence was definitely not Trump’s first choice when it came to speech topics on Saturday. Rather, the people Trump was most devoted to talking about at the event were himself and opponent Hillary Clinton, who he lambasted as a corrupt criminal as often as possible. He insisted that “she got away with murder — in fact, I think it might be her greatest accomplishment,” when referring to how Clinton had not been found criminally liable for having used a private email server during her time as Secretary of State. Trump also claimed that Clinton was responsible for the rise of ISIS and pretty much everything else that’s gone wrong, foreign-policy-wise, during the Obama administration. Trump insisted that Clinton would “pay the price” for her supposed crimes come election day. … [Read more...] about Trump Formally Unveils Himself As the Winner Who Got to Settle for Mike Pence As Running Mate
