New York (CNN Business) A New York state judge denied the Trump Organization and its former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg's motions to dismiss tax fraud charges during a hearing Friday. Judge Juan Merchan said he would grant a hearing to hear arguments over whether statements Weisselberg made while in custody the day of his arrest in July 2021 could be suppressed. The Manhattan district attorney's office did not oppose the hearing but opposed the motion. Weisselberg and the Trump Organization were indicted last year on charges they were involved in a 15-year tax fraud scheme. They both pleaded not guilty. The judge said jury selection would begin in the trial on October 24. The hearing is the first court appearance for Weisselberg and lawyers for the Trump Organization in nearly a year and comes amid a dramatic legal week for former President Donald Trump. Kaiser is canceling mental health appointments ahead of strikes, union claims
The health care union organizing an upcoming strike of more than 2,000 Kaiser Permanente mental health workers said Thursday that the health care giant was illegally canceling appointments ahead of the planned labor action. The National Union of Healthcare Workers filed a complaint with state officials Thursday accusing Kaiser officials of canceling or suspending mental and behavioral health services citing the workers’ strike, which is set to begin on Monday. Reasons for strike include worker complaints over high wait times for patients — weeks or even months, according to the union — as well as high workloads and burnout among staff. According to state law, Kaiser would have to continue providing timely health care to patients, even during the strike: If in-network services are not available, Kaiser must arrange for out-of-network care for its patients at the same cost, according to SB221, a California law passed last year requiring health plans to provide timely access to … [Read more...] about Kaiser is canceling mental health appointments ahead of strikes, union claims
Former detective to plead guilty to federal charges in Breonna Taylor case
A former Louisville police detective plans to plead guilty this month to federal charges in the 2020 fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor , whose death in a botched police raid sparked global protests against police brutality and systemic racism. It would be the first conviction in the case. The former detective, Kelly Goodlett, her attorney and an attorney representing the Justice Department confirmed her plea agreement during an online court hearing Friday. A hearing was set for Aug. 22. Goodlett was released on a $10,000 bond. Goodlett was charged this month with helping to falsify a search warrant and then trying to cover it up. She resigned from the Louisville Metro Police Department a day after the Justice Department announced indictments against her and three other current or former officers — former detectives Joshua Jaynes and Brett Hankison, and Kyle Meany, a sergeant who the police chief sent a termination notice on Monday. Liz Cheney: Any Mention of McCarthy, Stefanik Makes Her ‘Really Angry’
Any mention of Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) makes her very angry, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) told the Atlantic in a published article by Mark Leibovich on Friday. Cheney’s anger comes after McCarthy led a vote of no confidence against her among Republican House members in May. The vote forced her to exit the third most powerful position in the GOP House caucus, the conference chair, whose responsibility it is to raise money for the party. A few days later, Stefanik was elected Republican conference chair Friday by a secret ballot vote of 134-46. “I’m truly honored and humbled to earn the support of my colleagues to serve as House Republican Conference Chair,” Stefanik said after the vote. “House Republicans are united in our focus to fight on behalf of the American people to save our country from the radical Socialist Democrat agenda of President Biden and Nancy Pelosi.” Cheney has since allied herself with the Democrats, holding hearings with them on … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney: Any Mention of McCarthy, Stefanik Makes Her ‘Really Angry’
Oakland deli with rich family history serves the tastiest cheap sandwiches
Elena Durante said stepping into her father’s store as a child overwhelmed her senses. Growing up in the family-run grocery business that sold everything from fine wines and olive oils to salt cod and big wheels of cheese, she described the sweet and peppery aromas of imported spices and remembers running her little fingers through barrels of dry beans. “There were so many products here in the ’60s. You’d smell every kind of spice,” she said. “I remember my dad coming home at night in his delivery van, and you couldn’t really get the smell of Ratto’s out of it. I can’t really describe it. Think of it as cheesy, fishy, briny, umami-ish.” Durante is the great-granddaughter of Giovanni Battista Ratto, the founder of the premier Oakland grocer, and the man behind its namesake since 1897. As a fourth-generation owner, she took over the business in 2002 from her father, Martin Durante, who had inherited Ratto’s in the ’50s from his own father, who was also named Martin Durante. … [Read more...] about Oakland deli with rich family history serves the tastiest cheap sandwiches
