Ian Thibodeau The Detroit News Published 9:14 AM EDT Apr 26, 2019 The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. emissions certifications process, the automaker reported Friday in a regulatory filing. Ford in February said it was investigating if incorrect computer modeling caused it to misstate fuel economy and emissions for some vehicles. The automaker hired an outside firm to investigate the vehicle "road load" specifications used in the company's testing and applications for emissions and fuel economy standards. Ford notified the Environmental Protection Agency at the time. Ford in the Friday regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission wrote that the "potential concern does not involve the use of defeat devices," like those used in the Volkswagen AG emissions scandal. Derek Johnson, a former Aspen city councilman who once ran for mayor, is the subject of a criminal investigation involving his former employer, the Aspen Skiing Co.Johnson, a former SkiCo executive, said Monday that he was not aware of a criminal investigation, though law enforcement sources confirmed the inquiry. Aside from those sources, detective Adriano Minniti with the Aspen Police Department said that he is working on a case involving the SkiCo, but said he cannot yet disclose “who or what is being investigated.”The investigation appears to be in its early stages, and few details were available Monday, though sources said it appears to focus on Johnson’s handling of ski equipment.Johnson, the former managing director of the SkiCo’s retail and rental operations, and the company said little about the case. The Justice Department has closed a criminal investigation into SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. over its response to a 2013 documentary that criticized the company’s treatment of killer whales and caused its attendance and stock to drop. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem has appointed Deputy Director Lonnie Grabowska to the top spot at the BCI. Grabowska will succeed Dallas Carlson, who was confirmed as U.S. Marshal for North Dakota earlier this month. Grabowska has worked in the bureau for more than 15 years, beginning as a special agent in 2003 assigned to the Drug Task Force. He was promoted to chief agent in 2007 and deputy director in 2012. Hamilton disclosed news of the criminal investigation in a sharply worded response to another alderman, who criticized him in a news release one day earlier for not issuing a subpoena compelling former Health Commissioner Bevan Baker to testify at City Hall about the city's troubled lead program. "If you had simply asked, like most other council members, you would have known that Bevan had initially agreed to appear and answer questions about the City of Milwaukee Health Department's lead program," Hamilton wrote.
