President Reagan opened a campaign today to sustain his expected veto of an $87.9 billion highway and mass transit bill. Supporters said the fight would show whether the President has been able to regain some of the political leverage he has lost in recent months. Mr. Reagan intends to veto the bill in the next few days, according to his aides, because it is about $10 billion larger … [Read more...] about REAGAN SET TO VETO HIGHWAY BILL

Who Buys Electric Cars In California — And Who Doesn’t?

March 22, 2023 by patch.com Leave a Comment

1 Traffic & Transit Though ownership is disproportionate, interest in electric cars is high across all incomes and races, according to a 2019 survey. CalMatters , News Partner Posted Reply In Atherton, one of the nation’s richest towns, giant oaks and well-manicured hedges surround gated mansions owned by some of Silicon Valley’s most prominent billionaires, basketball stars, tech executives and venture capitalists. Each set on an acre of land, six-bedroom estates, brick-paved pathways, neoclassical statues and cascading fountains are on full display. But increasingly, another status symbol has been parked in these driveways: a shiny electric car — sometimes two. This tiny San Mateo County community — with an average home value of almost $7.5 million and average household income exceeding half a million dollars — has California’s highest percentage of electric cars, according to a CalMatters analysis of data from the … [Read more...] about Who Buys Electric Cars In California — And Who Doesn’t?

Review: “1776”

The last thing anyone wants to see walking into a theater is a sign that warns, “The first act lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes.’ ” Luckily for Town Hall Arts Center audiences, the second act of “1776” is worth the wait. No disrespect to the Bible, but the genesis of the Declaration of Independence also ranks among the greatest stories ever told. “1776” joins “Pure Confidence” and “A House With No Walls” as current local stagings tackling slavery (and it’s not even February!). If you don’t know how close slavery came to torpedoing the Declaration before it inked a single Hancock, that’s reason enough to take in John Thornberry’s solid, at times superlative, staging. “1776” is not an obvious choice for Town Hall, or any local theater. It requires 24 men (and two women), many of a certain age, all capable of tackling difficult harmonies. It’s also not a natural choice for a tiny stage that makes Independence Hall look more like a schoolroom. But what’s bad for cramped actors is great … [Read more...] about Review: “1776”

A Scoreless Wonder and a Master of the Sinker

March 23, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Zac Gallen had just been promoted to Class AA, and his first assignment for the Springfield Cardinals was to chart the pitches of a teammate. It was a routine task and Gallen was tired, but a coach gave him a tip: “You might want to pay attention to this.” The “this” in question was Sandy Alcantara in 2017, a few months before he and Gallen would be traded from the St. Louis organization to Miami for outfielder Marcell Ozuna. Alcantara, a willowy right-hander from the Dominican Republic, was throwing 97 to 102 miles per hour, Gallen recalled, working to refine his secondary pitches but clearly a name to remember. Last season, Alcantara was the unanimous National League Cy Young Award winner for the Marlins. He had all the indications of a breakout candidate hiding in plain sight: durability, performance, relative anonymity and youth. Entering 2022, Alcantara was coming off a season in which he surpassed 30 starts and 180 innings and had an E.R.A. under 3.50. … [Read more...] about A Scoreless Wonder and a Master of the Sinker

Going for the Bling: Hollywood Burglars

November 14, 2009 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

LOS ANGELES THE gang’s nickname is still up for grabs. Four teenage girls and two men suspected of stealing jewelry and clothing from the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and other celebrities have been tagged with a few tantalizing names since their purported crime spree came to light. “The Burglar Bunch,” trumpeted TMZ. “The Bling Ring,” rhymed The Los Angeles Times. The “Hollywood Hills Burglars,” said the Los Angeles police. The group, most 18 and 19 years old, used celebrity Web sites, according to investigators, to figure out when their victims — a roster of young Hollywood that also includes Rachel Bilson of “The O.C.,” Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” fame and Audrina Patridge of “The Hills”— would be attending premieres and other events and would therefore not be home. In the stars’ homes, burglars helped themselves to Rolex watches, Louis Vuitton bags and other baubles featured in celebrity magazines, authorities say. Six accused members of … [Read more...] about Going for the Bling: Hollywood Burglars
