Data breaches are on the rise, too, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III), a nonprofit dedicated to improving public understanding of insurance. III’s Identity Theft Resource Center reports that breaches hit a new record in 2017 – again – with 1,579 breaches tracked, up 44.7 percent from 1,091 in 2016. The number of records exposed rose to about 179 million, compared with 37 million in 2016. In 2017, the largest U.S. credit bureau, Equifax, suffered a headline-making breach that exposed the personal data of 145 million people, including Social Security numbers. Two major United States health insurers were breached in 2015, exposing the data of 90 million customers. World Donald Trump International Affairs Russia investigation President Donald Trump just made it a lot easier for the U.S. to launch offensive cyber attacks against U.S. adversaries. This week, reports revealed that the Trump administration had reversed an Obama-era policy known as the Presidential Policy Directive 20, which laid out a detailed framework government agencies had to follow to launch an offensive cyber attack. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump officially reversed the directive Wednesday. The report claimed national security adviser John Bolton was behind the decision to reverse the policy. Since assuming his role, Bolton has worked to undo the cyber security policy put in place under former President Barack Obama. In May, Bolton eliminated the National Security Council’s cyber security coordinator role altogether, saying that it was no longer necessary because lower-level officials were already working on it.
