The one-time president and CEO of a social services agency for troubled Alaskan youth is accused of assaulting a flight attendant because his tray table was broken. “I’m a Gold Medallion; I can do whatever I want. Fuck you,” former AK Child & Family boss and licensed clinical social worker Denis McCarville said when other passengers intervened, according to a federal criminal complaint obtained by The Daily Beast . He later told the FBI that “it would be very rare if he were to say… the ‘F’ word, as he is a social worker and does clinical work with kids,” the filing states. McCarville, 70, took the top job at the venerable nonprofit in 2011 , when it was still known as Alaska Children’s Services. Before that, he served as CEO of a group of residential treatment centers in Omaha, Nebraska. AK Child & Family says it “ provides hope in troubled young lives through a broad range of psychiatric services ,” which includes helping young people “ develop self-esteem and … [Read more...] about ‘Fuck You’: Social Worker Accused of Assaulting Delta Flight Attendant

Ex-NFL player Zac Stacy enters plea deal in domestic violence case
An Orange County judge accepted a plea deal Thursday and set a sentencing date in the case of Zac Stacy, a former NFL football player who was arrested in late 2021 after he was caught beating the mother of his child in a viral video. Stacy, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal mischief, according to records filed in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. In exchange for meeting requirements including no contact with the victim, his felony battery charges will be dropped. Stacy faces up to 120 days in jail and a maximum fine of $6,000, court records said. In November 2021, a video of Stacy attacking the mother of his then-infant son went viral after it was shared online by the victim. Days later, the former running back for the St. Louis Rams and New York Jets was arrested at Orlando International Airport as he exited a flight from Nashville. In the viral video shared with investigators, Stacy was seen knocking the woman to the ground and throwing her into a nearby … [Read more...] about Ex-NFL player Zac Stacy enters plea deal in domestic violence case

Why Chinese Companies Are Investing Billions in Mexico
Bill Chan had never set foot anywhere in Mexico, let alone the lonely stretch of desert in the north of the country where he abruptly decided to build a $300 million factory. But that seemed a trifling detail amid the pressure to adapt to a swiftly changing global economy. It was January 2022, and Mr. Chan’s company, Man Wah Furniture Manufacturing, was confronting grave challenges in moving sofas from its factories in China to customers in the United States. Shipping prices were skyrocketing. Washington and Beijing were locked in a fierce trade war. Man Wah, one of China’s largest furniture companies, was eager to make its products on the North American side of the Pacific. “Our main market is the United States,” said Mr. Chan, chief executive of Man Wah’s Mexico subsidiary. “We don’t want to lose that market.” That same objective explains why scores of major Chinese companies are investing aggressively in Mexico, taking advantage of an expansive North American trade … [Read more...] about Why Chinese Companies Are Investing Billions in Mexico
How Prosecutors Say a Top F.B.I. Agent Sold His Services Overseas
When Charles McGonigal, a former counterintelligence chief with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was accused of using his position to benefit an associate’s business in Eastern Europe, it represented a startling turn for a high-ranking official who had been entrusted with access to some of the most sensitive secrets held by the American intelligence community. But it also set off a scramble within the bureau to assess the potential damage and determine whether any counterintelligence or law enforcement operations were compromised, according to two people familiar with the review, with the F.B.I.’s director, Christopher A. Wray, treating the case as a top priority. “It puts a question mark next to everything he was involved in,” said Holden Triplett, a former F.B.I. counterintelligence official who left in 2020 and co-founded Trenchcoat Advisors, a risk management consultancy. “You’d be trying to figure out, ‘OK, when did this start and what did he touch after it started?’” … [Read more...] about How Prosecutors Say a Top F.B.I. Nets Notebook: Ben Simmons to miss fourth straight game with knee soreness and swelling
Nets’ star Ben Simmons will likely miss his fourth straight game due to left knee soreness this Saturday against the Washington Wizards, head coach Jacque Vaughn said on a Zoom conference call on Friday. Simmons left Brooklyn’s Jan. 26 loss to the Detroit Pistons after sustaining what appeared to be a swipe toward the eye. The Nets later announced he would not return due to soreness in his left knee. Vaughn said Simmons received an MRI that came up clean. Reserve forward T.J. Warren is also expected to miss his fourth straight game after sustaining a left shin contusion in the loss to the Pistons. “So, Ben and TJ got on the court a little bit yesterday. They’ll probably, in about another half an hour or so, they’ll try to get on the court again,” Vaughn said from Brooklyn’s practice facility in Industry City on Friday. “You know, both are progressing. We’ll list them both as not available for Saturday’s game, and whether that is probable or questionable, we’ll see after … [Read more...] about Nets Notebook: Ben Simmons to miss fourth straight game with knee soreness and swelling
