Japan: ‘Virus Vigilantes’ Threaten People for Coronavirus Violations

November 17, 2020 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Japan’s Nikkei Asian Reviews highlighted the emergency of “virus vigilantes” in the country on Tuesday: enforcers that use peer pressure to keep people from violating lockdown restrictions without actually having any legitimate authority. Observers view the behavior as a symptom of Japanese society’s emphasis on conformity, which some argue has increased feelings of social suffocation during the pandemic, possibly contributing to recent spikes in Japan’s suicide rates. Hiroaki Murata, the owner of a bar and music club in Tokyo, told Nikkei on Tuesday that he received a warning from a virus vigilante in April at the height of Japan’s coronavirus outbreak that left him and his wife feeling “frightened.” “For safety, refrain from opening live music clubs until the state of emergency ends,” read a typed note taped to Murata’s store sign. “If I find you opening again, I’ll call the police.” The note was signed simply, “a neighbor.” On the day that Murata received the typed … [Read more...] about Japan: ‘Virus Vigilantes’ Threaten People for Coronavirus Violations

The N.B.A. vs. the Coronavirus May Be the Toughest Playoff Matchup

May 22, 2021 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

The N.B.A. planned for each of its 30 teams to play 72 games across 145 days this season, its 75th. Despite a rash of postponements and injuries to big-name stars , all 1,080 games were played in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic. No one in the league office is celebrating yet. “We knew it was going to be a challenge to get through all of the games in a way that we thought kept people safe, and we’re really happy to have done that,” said David Weiss, the N.B.A.’s senior vice president of player matters. “At the same time, the virus keeps changing, so what we have to do keeps changing.” “No one knows everything about Covid,” Weiss added, “and so we’re always willing to revisit what we do.” With the playoffs underway, here are answers to some of the questions about where things stand with the N.B.A.’s health and safety rules related to the coronavirus . Here’s what you need to know: How did the season go without a bubble? What will happen if a player … [Read more...] about The N.B.A. vs. the Coronavirus May Be the Toughest Playoff Matchup

FCC Slaps Down Request To Investigate Networks That Air Trump’s Coronavirus Briefings

April 6, 2020 by dailycaller.com Leave a Comment

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai dismissed a petition for the agency to investigate news networks that air President Donald Trump’s press briefings on coronavirus. The independent government agency slapped down a request from advocacy group Free Press because press freedoms are too important, Pai said in a tweet Monday announcing the decision. The tweet included screenshot of a press statement addressing the petition. “The federal government will not — and never should — investigate broadcasters for their editorial judgments,” Pai said in the statement. “We leave it to broadcasters to determine for themselves how to cover this national emergency, including live events involving our nation’s leaders.” Under my leadership, the @FCC has always defended Americans’ 1st Amendment freedoms, including freedom of the press. That’s why we’ve rejected a special interest’s demand that we investigate broadcasters for their editorial judgments. @FCC staff … [Read more...] about FCC Slaps Down Request To Investigate Networks That Air Trump’s Coronavirus Briefings

Post-Pandemic Japan Sees First-in-a-Generation Crime Spike

February 3, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan published statistics on Thursday showing that the country experienced an increase in criminal activity in 2022 for the first time in 20 years. The report tracked the number of police reports on documented crimes in addition to arrests. Among the crimes identified as seeing a significant rise in frequency were rape, child abuse, and street crimes, such as muggings and bicycle thefts. The rates of domestic violence and child abuse hit “all-time highs,” according to a report by the Indian news site First Post. Police also referred a record number of children to consultation centers after finding evidence of abuse. The increase follows a dramatic drop in crime following the eruption of the coronavirus pandemic originating in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. Japan shut its schools in February 2020 and sternly encouraged mask usage and “social distancing.” Relatively lax, compared to other parts of the world, government coronavirus restrictions … [Read more...] about Post-Pandemic Japan Sees First-in-a-Generation Crime Spike

N.B.A. Investigating Kyrie Irving Over Maskless Party Video

January 13, 2021 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

The N.B.A. is investigating whether Nets guard Kyrie Irving violated the league’s coronavirus protocols after a video emerged Monday on social media that appeared to show him at a crowded indoor party without wearing a mask. The N.B.A.’s health protocols prohibit players from attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people. If the league determines that Irving broke these rules, he could be fined 1/81.6 of his estimated $33 million annual salary (more than $400,000) for each game he has to miss while quarantining. The length of the quarantine depends on several factors, such as the setting of the violation and how long the player was there. Sean Marks, the Nets general manager, said in a statement that the team was aware of the video, which it described as showing Irving at a “family gathering.” “We are reviewing the circumstances with both Kyrie and the N.B.A. in order to determine compliance with health and safety protocols,” Marks said. … [Read more...] about N.B.A. Investigating Kyrie Irving Over Maskless Party Video

N.B.A. Says ‘No Plans to Pause the Season’ as Virus Cases Increase

January 10, 2021 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

The N.B.A. postponed a game on Sunday night between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics when the Heat did not have enough available players because of the league’s coronavirus health and safety protocols. It was the second game of the season postponed after the protocols left a team short-handed. “Because of ongoing contact tracing with the Heat, the team does not have the league-required eight available players to proceed with tonight’s game against the Celtics,” the league said in a statement. The Celtics on Sunday were also missing a significant portion of their roster, including their stars. Less than a month in, the season is trending in the wrong direction, with a growing number of players missing games after testing positive for, or potentially being exposed to, the virus. “We anticipated that there would be game postponements this season and planned this season accordingly,” Mike Bass, a league spokesman, told The New York Times. “There are no plans to pause the season. … [Read more...] about N.B.A. Says ‘No Plans to Pause the Season’ as Virus Cases Increase
