Photo-Illustration: The Strategist; Photo: Retailer When I wrote about my hiking and backpacking essentials last summer, one of the first things I put on my list was a dry bag — a waterproof, airtight sack that keeps your belongings from getting wet. It’s one of my go-to items on my packing list because it’s lightweight and helps keep my stuff organized and, most important, dry. (Even when my entire pack gets wet, my stuff inside stays protected.) And right now, the bag I use from Sea to Summit is 25 percent off. When I’m backpacking, I keep all of my extra layers in a dry bag, because soaked clothing can quickly spell danger when you’re exposed in the wilderness: A drenched shirt can lower your body temperature and even cause hypothermia if you’re wet for too long (especially in colder weather). I also use dry bags for food (the roll-top clip closure makes it easy to hang it from a tree with a shoestring or rope as a bear bag ), electronics, and printed materials like … [Read more...] about The Stuff Sack That Keeps All of My Hiking Gear Dry Is 25 Percent Off Right Now

Giulio Regeni, Italian Student, Was Under Investigation in Egypt Before His Death
CAIRO, Egypt — Egyptian security officers investigated an Italian graduate student for several days just two weeks before his brutalized body was discovered on the outskirts of Cairo in February, Egypt ’s top prosecutor said on Friday, altering the official timeline of events leading up to the man’s disappearance. In a statement released Friday, the prosecutor, Nabil Sadek, acknowledged for the first time that the Egyptian police had formally investigated Giulio Regeni, 28, a doctoral candidate who was researching labor movements. While meeting with Italian officials in Rome on Friday, Mr. Sadek said the Cairo police had received a report on Jan. 7 about Mr. Regeni from the chief of the country’s independent street vendors union, prompting an investigation. Mr. Regeni was last seen on Jan. 25. His body was found on Feb. 3, half-naked with cigarette burns and signs that he had been beaten on his body and feet. In a two-page joint statement issued by Mr. Sadek and his … [Read more...] about Giulio Regeni, Italian Student, Was Under Investigation in Egypt Before His Death
A mystery buyer just purchased entire California ghost town Eagle Mountain for $22.5M
A road diverges in the yellow flats along the outer rim of Joshua Tree National Park. The two lanes in the middle of the desert peel off Interstate 10, about an hour and a half from Palm Springs. They break at the entrance to Eagle Mountain, a ghost town in the California desert that has attracted continuous attention since its untimely end in 1983. Unlike other California ghost towns, Eagle Mountain never truly died. Now, an unknown buyer has purchased the town to add a new chapter to its storied history. Formerly a company town for Kaiser Steel, Eagle Mountain provided a palm tree-studded oasis for some 4,000 residents. Most were employed by the mine. Workers drilled, blasted and shoveled the nearby mountains in search of iron ore. At the mine’s peak, they broke records for daily production levels, but it only took a few years of poor outcomes for the mine to shutter, evicting the population. Eagle Mountain rose from the arid brush at the end of the 1940s to thrive for a … [Read more...] about A mystery buyer just purchased entire California ghost town Eagle Mountain for $22.5M

At His Own Wake, Celebrating Life and the Gift of Death
VICTORIA, British Columbia — Two days before he was scheduled to die, John Shields roused in his hospice bed with an unusual idea. He wanted to organize an Irish wake for himself. It would be old-fashioned with music and booze, except for one notable detail — he would be present. The party should take up a big section of Swiss Chalet, a family-style chain restaurant on the road out of town. Mr. Shields wanted his last supper to be one he so often enjoyed on Friday nights when he was a young Catholic priest — rotisserie chicken legs with gravy. Then, his family would take him home and he would die there in the morning, preferably in the garden. It was his favorite spot, rocky and wild. Flowering native shrubs pressed in from all sides and a stone Buddha and birdbath peeked out from among the ferns and boulders. Before he got sick, Mr. Shields liked to sit in his old Adirondack chair and watch the bald eagles train their juveniles to soar overhead. He meditated there twice a day, … [Read more...] about At His Own Wake, Celebrating Life and the Gift of Death
