Along with increased bullpen usage, three true outcomes taking over the batter’s box and the stolen base going the way of the dodo bird, there’s been another trend that’s taken over Major League Baseball recently. Each of the last six teams to win a ring have had a top-flight shortstop manning the prized position. The six most recent starting shortstops to win it all (Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts, Trea Turner, Corey Seager, Dansby Swanson and Jeremy Pena) all inhabited the upper class of their position at the time of their life-changing victory. All six are still among the best of the best, too, with the first five members of that group now under contract for a combined $989 million. Pena, just 25 years old with a World Series MVP, Championship Series MVP and Gold Glove already in his clutches, is certainly blazing a trail toward a different tax bracket as well. The path to a trophy goes through a brawny shortstop. That much has been clear since Correa slugged .562 with 14 RBI in … [Read more...] about Can you win it all without an elite shortstop? Kyle Kuzma stays hot, but not hot enough to lift Wizards past Knicks
WASHINGTON - Kyle Kuzma had the ball in his hands in the final seconds for the second game in a row, but there was no miracle finish this time. Kuzma had been on his own for much of the Wizards' 112-108 loss to the New York Knicks, with Kristaps Porzingis starting slow, Bradley Beal in street clothes as he works his way back from a left hamstring strain and point guard Monte Morris out with hamstring soreness of his own. Kuzma's task was to match Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett and Julius Randle largely by himself. He gave his team a chance by hitting two of three free throw attempts to put Washington within two points with 16 seconds to play, but Brunson followed with two of his own from the stripe. The Wizards then missed two quality looks from the three-point line, one from Kuzma and another from Rui Hachimura, to seal their fate. Kuzma's season-high 40 points was a highlight of an otherwise subpar night of Wizards offense. He added seven rebounds and seven assists. Porzingis … [Read more...] about Kyle Kuzma stays hot, but not hot enough to lift Wizards past Knicks

Ex-Officer in Florida Gets 25 Years in Prison for Killing Black Man
A former police officer in Florida was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting a black man who had been awaiting help on a highway more than three years ago. “This has been a heartbreaking case,” Judge Joseph Marx said in sentencing the former officer, Nouman K. Raja, for the two counts a jury found him guilty of last month : manslaughter by culpable negligence and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. Mr. Raja, 41, who had faced a maximum penalty of life in prison in the fatal shooting of Corey Jones, received a 25-year term for each count. The sentences will be served concurrently. In asking the judge to hand down the maximum sentence, Adrienne Ellis, the chief assistant state’s attorney, said that Mr. Jones, 31, “had done nothing wrong that night.”. “He did everything right, and yet, he still lost his life,” she said. “Corey essentially begged the defendant not to kill him.” Richard G. Lubin, who oversaw Mr. Raja’s defense team, asked … [Read more...] about Ex-Officer in Florida Gets 25 Years in Prison for Killing Black Man
