Apple CEO Tim Cook praised his company’s “symbiotic relationship” with China during his first visit to the communist country since the Chinese coronavirus pandemic plagued the world. “We could not be more excited. Apple and China — grew together and so this has been a symbiotic kind of relationship,” Cook said at the China Development Forum in Beijing, according to a report by Financial Times . Cook added that this year, Apple would celebrate its 30th anniversary in China, which makes the vast majority of the company’s iPhones. “We have a very large supply chain operation in China and then of course we also have our — Apple stores,” Cook said. “From the moment we hit the ground yesterday, we couldn’t wait to see some of our customers so we … [Read more...] about Silicon Commies: Tim Cook Praises Apple’s ‘Symbiotic’ Relationship with China

Meet an Intergalactic Spider in ‘Spaceman of Bohemia’
SPACEMAN OF BOHEMIA All new books, but debut novels especially, are blind dates. The raconteur who charmingly burbles during drinks is tapped out of stories by the time the oysters arrive; the genius who wears his erudition so lightly over appetizers starts clubbing you over the head with it during dessert. ( No, your mind screams when things turn . And it was all going so well. ) I start a lot of debut novels in this job. Most betray me at some point or another — though a few make my heart do cartwheels, or at least a pirouette. Jaroslav Kalfar’s “Spaceman of Bohemia” is not a perfect first effort. But it’s a frenetically imaginative one, booming with vitality and originality when it isn’t indulging in the occasional excess. Kalfar’s voice is distinct enough to leave tread marks. He has a great snout for the absurd. He has such a lively mind and so many ideas to explore that it only bothered me a little — well, more than a little, but less than usual — that this book … [Read more...] about Meet an Intergalactic Spider in ‘Spaceman of Bohemia’

Bowman says banning TikTok is ‘racist’ to Chinese, claims U.S. social media apps pose the real threat Rep. Jamaal Bowman has recently positioned himself as one of the most ardent defenders of TikTok, which critics have alleged is a Chinese spyware app. The New York Democrat , meanwhile, is tied to a foundation that received a $150,000 donation from TikTok's parent company late last year. Bowman, an avid TikTok user, held a Wednesday press conference on Capitol Hill defending the popular social media app alongside two other Democratic lawmakers and so-called TikTok influencers. During the presser, the "Squad" member claimed that politicians are hypocrites for singling out the app when its American-owned counterparts have allowed Russia, for example, "to interfere with our 2016 election" and have "allowed lies and … [Read more...] about ‘Squad’ defender of alleged Chinese spy app tied to nonprofit that received $150K from its parent company

A Canadian member of parliament (MP) has resigned from the Liberal Party caucus following allegations of involvement in Chinese interference with Canadian affairs. Dem Rep. Bowman: TikTok Concerns ‘Fear-Mongering Tactics’
On Saturday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation,” Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) dismissed concerns over the social media application TikTok. The New York State Democratic lawmaker called congressional deliberations on TikTok part of Republican so-called “fear-mongering tactics.” “Let me go to another subject with you,” host Al Sharpton said. “Congress held hearings on this week on a proposal to ban the popular social media app TikTok. Critics argue the Chinese-owned platform poses a serious National Security threat. You are one of the few lawmakers from either party who has vocally opposed such a ban, and you’ve expressed concern about what you call the xenophobic anti-China rhetoric surrounding the issue. Can you explain your position a little further?” “So Republicans cannot govern on the issues, so they often use fear-mongering tactics to display themselves as being strong lawmakers,” Bowman replied. “So whether it is fear-mongering, as it deals with the border, or the debt … [Read more...] about Dem Rep. Is It New York Fashion Week? Or Is It Rihanna Inc.?
Is New York Fashion Week, which officially begins Thursday but actually begins Wednesday (thank you, Tom Ford), a dead duck? Is it a sinking ship, in the soup, up the creek? Is it — gasp! — over? Not “over” in the literal sense, of course. There are more than 130 shows on the schedule. But “over” in the substantive sense. Over as a power player in a global system that puts a premium on showcasing clothes that redefine how women present themselves. Over as we know it. Forget whether or not suits are back; this is the existential question underpinning the fashion season. The debate has been raging all summer, ever since Rodarte and Proenza Schouler decamped to Paris for couture in July, and Thom Browne announced he would move to Paris and show during ready-to-wear, and then Joseph Altuzarra said “me too,” and even Lacoste said it was likewise heading back to its city of birth, and then Narciso Rodriguez canceled his show in favor of individual presentations, and Rag & Bone … [Read more...] about Is It New York Fashion Week?
