Tech Earnings Give a Wake-Up Call to Investors

February 3, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

A new era of austerity Shares in tech companies are in retreat after investors got sobering news on Thursday about three of the industry’s giants — Alphabet, Amazon and Apple — including slowing demand for everything from iPhones to digital ads to cloud services. “You’re hearing that from, I would think, everybody ,” Tim Cook of Apple said of the challenging environment on CNBC. That outlook is largely responsible for Nasdaq 100 futures being down 1.4 percent this morning, eroding Thursday’s big tech stock gains after investors hoped that the Facebook parent Meta had shown tech how to operate in leaner times. Plenty of headwinds are hitting the tech sector. Central bankers this week reiterated that they’re not done raising interest rates (even if market participants don’t fully believe it ). Together with a slowing economy, that has led companies and consumers alike to spend less — a move toward austerity that tech companies have now embraced , after years of rocketing … [Read more...] about Tech Earnings Give a Wake-Up Call to Investors

Tennessee Democrats Want to Cancel Columbus Day Holiday and Replace it with Super Bowl Monday

February 3, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Democrats in Tennessee are proposing that the state trade holidays and replace Columbus Day with a new holiday of Super Bowl Monday. Democrats Senator London Lamar and Representative Joe Towns Jr. introduced their bill on Wednesday to suggest that the state dump any recognition of Columbus Day and replace it with a Super Bowl Monday holiday to celebrate the game, which is always on Sunday, according to WKRN-TV. Thus far, the bill’s summary only reads, “As introduced, removes Columbus Day as a legal holiday; designates the first Monday after the Super Bowl as a legal holiday.” The Democrats say the bill would change Tennessee Code “by deleting the language, ‘the second Monday in October, known as ‘Columbus Day,'” and inserting the language, “the first Monday after the Super Bowl, known as ‘Super Bowl Monday.'” But it appears that there is only one reason for this bill to exist: to serve as another wake attack on Columbus Day. A 06 October 2007 photo shows the statue … [Read more...] about Tennessee Democrats Want to Cancel Columbus Day Holiday and Replace it with Super Bowl Monday

THE ENGLISH department at Yale used to resemble a sort of English country estate. It included a great house of many wings and rooms (the Elizabethan Pavilion, the Metaphysical Poets Billiard Parlor, the T. S. Eliot Chapel and so forth) and, normally, one entered this house via certain well-marked paths and avenues that ran through a spacious park. The park looked as though Nature had … [Read more...] about THE TYRANNY OF THE YALE CRITICS

Black Atlantans Terrorized by Memphis PD Chief’s Old Unit Speak Out: ‘They’d Beat Your Ass’

February 3, 2023 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

When the video of Tyre Nichols’ brutal beating by Memphis police was released to the public a week ago, many—including Nichols’ family—applauded Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis’ swift action in firing the officers involved in his beating, calling it a blueprint for police accountability moving forward. Davis had recently been seen as a figure willing to speak out for police reform, even to the Senate , following the murder of George Floyd and as a president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. But to some Atlantans, the beating of Nichols by members of Davis’ newly created (and now disbanded) SCORPION unit in Memphis reminded them of their own violent experience at the hands of another unit Davis commanded in the early 2000’s: the REDDOGs. And others have questioned whether she had learned from past mistakes when she created the SCORPION unit in Memphis to crack down on violence. “She took that same intent down… there and created a whole … [Read more...] about Black Atlantans Terrorized by Memphis PD Chief’s Old Unit Speak Out: ‘They’d Beat Your Ass’

A Return to Nordic Roots

July 30, 2012 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

MINNEAPOLIS THERE’S no escaping Scandinavian heritage in the Twin Cities. At every turn, there’s a billboard for Norwegian language-immersion camp or a “Drool if You’re Finnish” baby bib for sale. But in food terms, it’s long been easier to get an authentic taco al pastor, Thai green curry or a grass-fed beef slider than a good kanel snegl (cinnamon roll). There hasn’t been a successful Scandinavian restaurant here since 2003, when Aquavit, a slick expense-account-fueled import from Midtown Manhattan, closed after a lackluster run. “When I was growing up, if we wanted to have meatballs and lingonberries, we had to go to Ikea,” said Kathryn Anderson, a student at the University of Minnesota. “That’s how bad it was.” There are plenty of good restaurants in the Twin Cities: at least one great Mexican tamale joint (La Loma), several Vietnamese pho specialists and storefronts that cater to the cities’ large Somali and Hmong communities. Several upscale places, like Tilia, Heartland … [Read more...] about A Return to Nordic Roots

Fears of Russian Nuclear Weapons Use Have Diminished, but Could Re-emerge

February 3, 2023 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON — Last fall, tensions in Washington reached a crescendo as Moscow made persistent nuclear threats and U.S. intelligence reported discussions among Russian military leaders about the use of such weapons. Concerns remain over Russia using a nuclear weapon, but the tensions have since abated. Several factors explain why, officials said: A more stable battlefield, China’s warnings against the use of nuclear weapons , improved communications between Moscow and Washington and an increased role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Ukraine have contributed to a measure of stability. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, a senior U.S. official said recently, may well have come to the conclusion that the threats, which he once saw as leverage, were backfiring. The possibility of nuclear escalation continues to influence American decisions over what advanced weaponry to give Ukraine. But nearly a year into the war there, American policymakers and intelligence analysts … [Read more...] about Fears of Russian Nuclear Weapons Use Have Diminished, but Could Re-emerge
