WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Friday passed a sweeping healthcare, tax and climate change bill. Now they have to sell it. The vote was 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting in favor and all Republicans opposing it. With the midterm elections quickly approaching, congressional Democrats have had a series of legislative victories in recent weeks — expanding NATO, securing healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits, investing nearly $53 billion into the U.S. semiconductor industry and passing bipartisan gun safety legislation. That momentum has culminated in the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, an offshoot of the many versions of President Biden’s failed Build Back Better Act. The House on Friday passed the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which, unlike its moniker, would not reduce inflation, and instead spends hundreds of billions of dollars on climate change and Obamacare programs. The House passed the legislation along partisan lines, 220-207. The vote featured no Democrats voting against the bill and no Republicans voting for the bill. This includes Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a swing district Democrat who voted against the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Act. Breitbart News reported on Thursday that House Republican leadership would whip Republicans against the legislation to ensure that zero Republicans vote for the bill. President Barack Obama never missed a chance to talk about his environmental record. From his clean power plan to the Paris climate accord to emissions limits on vehicles, he made environmental policy a priority of his administration. Most of his environmental policy however, centered around his view of carbon dioxide as the most dangerous pollutant the United States produces. Climate change alarmism in the Democratic Party has deep roots, but the rise of a presidential candidate who made it such a major part of his platform, Al Gore, cemented climate change as a Democratic sacrament. BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A federal judge on Friday reinstated a moratorium on coal leasing from federal lands that was imposed under former President Barack Obama and then scuttled under former President Donald Trump, in an order that marked a major setback to the already struggling coal industry. The ruling from U.S. District Judge Brian Morris requires government officials to conduct a new environmental review before they can resume coal sales from federal lands. Morris faulted the government's previous review of the program, done under Trump, for failing to adequately consider the climate damage from coal's greenhouse gas emissions and other effects. Almost half the nation’s annual coal production — some 260 million tons last year — is mined by private companies from leases on federal land, primarily in Western states such as Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. Big banks that use their vast financial assets to oppose the fossil fuel industry in the name of reducing climate change are doing damage control as state treasurers and lawmakers take action against woke environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing. By taking environmental concerns into account in their investment decisions, large financial firms such as BlackRock , Goldman Sachs , JPMorgan , Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley are operating what some policy experts, GOP lawmakers, and state treasurers say is an effective boycott of the fossil fuel industry. Republican state treasurers have taken note of this practice, and many are pushing back.
