Trump’s Latest Acquisition: Christie’s Soul
Chris Christie gazed up at the back of Donald Trump’s golden head in a Mar-a-Lago ballroom the evening of Super Tuesday. His mouth was slightly open. His brow was furrowed. His eyes were wide and uncertain, as if adjusting to the soft light of the crystal chandeliers that adorn his new world for the first time since Friday, when he shocked the political class and the members of his own inner circle by endorsing Trump’s candidacy. “Look, Planned Parenthood has done very good work for many, many—for millions of women,” Trump told the cameras, confidently. “I’m a conservative, but I’m a commonsense conservative.” Behind him, Christie seemed to shudder as his political career passed before his eyes. He had once admitted to supporting Planned Parenthood himself, in the mid-1990s when he served in local government, but he had long since converted to social conservatism and staunch anti-abortion politics. He spent an entire week of his presidential campaign this year denying that he had … [Read more...] about Trump’s Latest Acquisition: Christie’s Soul
Spanish Populists Vow Court Action Over Govt ‘Climate Fanaticism’
Spanish populist party VOX has promised to take the government to court over any climate-crazy policies the national government tries to enforce on regional governments. VOX has stated that it will pursue legal action against the left-wing national government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for any measure deemed to be unconstitutional or measures that fall to the roles of the regional governments themselves. The party, which is part of the government in the region of Castile and León following an election earlier this year, wrote to national Minister of Culture Miquel Iceta from the regions Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport on the issue, rebuking the national government’s proposed energy policy, El Mundo reports. Earlier this month, the Spanish government proposed that offices, shops and other venues not be allowed to set air conditioning below 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer and not raise heating more than 19 degrees Celcius (66 degrees … [Read more...] about Spanish Populists Vow Court Action Over Govt ‘Climate Fanaticism’

Musk and Trump and a Little Steve Jobs
Illustration: Cold War Steve As one of four credited screenwriters on 2008’s Iron Man , Mark Fergus had a big part in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s foundational superhero: Tony Stark, the inventor-billionaire-industrialist-playboy played by Robert Downey Jr. According to Fergus, the character was inspired by an amalgam of real people — but none so much as Elon Musk . Howard Hughes had blazed the trail for all the stuff that Elon is doing now. He established that turf back in the ’40s — the way he’s running his companies, dealing with the SEC, the government, politics, Hollywood, and investors. That was our rock-star industrialist model for Tony Stark. But Howard Hughes — I think people don’t know who the hell that is. Back in the early 2000s, when we were saying, “Who would be the Howard Hughes of now? Who’s an industrialist who would also be on the gossip pages? Is there even anyone like that?,” Elon’s name was definitely in the conversation as the guy who … [Read more...] about Musk and Trump and a Little Steve Jobs
The Mets Are Having an Extremely Un-Mets Season
Photo: Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images I can’t be the only person who takes cues for my emotional well-being from Mr. Met. Yes, fine: Technically Mr. Met is incapable of showing emotion, given that his head is a baseball, and his face that has been stitched with the rictus grin of the eternally doomed. But you can still tell what he’s feeling. When the New York Mets , whom he has loyally supported despite the sort of sustained abuse you’d never allow anyone you love to suffer through, are losing — as has usually been happening during the 59 years of his existence — he looks sad, forlorn … lost. Occasionally, Mr. Met loses his temper. Spending one’s entire life as an avatar of such a beleaguered franchise is a crazy-making enterprise, after all. These days, though, Mr. Met is not hanging his head in shame. These days, Mr. Met, alongside Mrs. Met , is taking selfies on the field, playing the trumpet atop the dugout, and generally making it feel like life’s … [Read more...] about The Mets Are Having an Extremely Un-Mets Season
