Why I keep warning you about the stock market bubble
By now, everyone should understand why I’ve been warning readers about the stock market bubble. And I didn’t warn you just once. I’ve been doing it repeatedly. The Dow Jones industrial average was down nearly 5,000 points from its peak before a sharp rally in stocks Wednesday made the performance just a little less dreadful. Even with Wednesday’s 1,000-point-plus gain, the Dow is still down just below 4,000 points. As of Monday — Christmas Eve — the stock market’s December performance alone was the worst since 1931. I think we all know what was going on back then. And despite the repeated efforts to coax the stock market higher — “manipulate” is actually the right word — Wall Street’s disaster of the past few months continued unabated until Wednesday’s miraculous intervention by the people who want stock prices up. You are going to hear a lot of nonsense about the stock market from all the people who … [Read more...] about Why I keep warning you about the stock market bubble
Stock market’s severe drop could be ominous sign
ASSOCIATED PRESS Trader Thomas McCauley works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 6. Last week, it felt like the bottom dropped out of the stock market. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average fell 4.5 percent for the week, ending with a 559-point rout Friday that left the index in negative territory for the year. The benchmark Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index has fallen into a “correction,” meaning it’s off more than 10 percent from its peak reached Sept. 20. And once-highflying tech stocks faltered with Apple, Facebook and Google parent Alphabet all ending last week showing stock-price losses for the year — driving the Nasdaq composite index into a correction too. So is this it — the end of the decade-long bull market? Or is it the sort of normal, healthy pullback that often follows a strong showing? “Everyone is trying to figure that out,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA … [Read more...] about Stock market’s severe drop could be ominous sign
Chinese leaders struggle to dispel stock market gloom
BEIJING — Lu Yushan, a retired salesman, has advice for investors in China's slumping stock market: Sell.Lu's shares soared over the past decade. But the 65-year-old cashed out this year, driven away by plunging prices, insider trading scandals, a cooling economy and a tariff war with Washington."Investors should get out," said Lu, watching flickering prices on a wall-mounted display at a Beijing brokerage. "I am here just for fun and not to make money."President Xi Jinping's government is struggling, with limited success, to dispel such gloom and talk stock prices back up with promises of tax cuts, more bank lending and a media campaign led by its economy czar. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index sank 30 percent from January through mid-October. Prices fell so far that China gave up its status as the No. 2 market by share value after the United States and dropped to third place behind Japan. The index has gained 5 percent since late October but is the world's worst performer … [Read more...] about Chinese leaders struggle to dispel stock market gloom
Stock market hits a milestone, but not everyone is celebrating
By Matthew Phillips The party has been going for more than a decade. But a lot of Americans haven’t been celebrating. Stocks crossed a major threshold Wednesday, when the 10-year-old bull market arguably became the longest on record. It ranks among the great booms in U.S. market history. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index has soared more than 320 percent since emerging from the rubble of the financial crisis in March 2009, creating more than $18 trillion in wealth. But the gains haven’t been spread among the masses. Stock market wealth is heavily concentrated among the richest families. As the stock market surged, prices for homes – the most important source and store of wealth for the American middle class – recovered much more slowly from the Great Recession and housing bust. Incomes, too, have only recently surpassed pre-crisis levels, despite steady economic growth in recent years. “This is the decade in which wealth inequality has increased the … [Read more...] about Stock market hits a milestone, but not everyone is celebrating
