HONG KONG - Tens of thousands of demonstrators marching peacefully in one of several authorized rallies on Sunday were dispersed with tear gas, ending a rare and cherished period of peace in Hong Kong amid half a year of pro-democracy protests. The march in Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side of the city had a clear message: the five demands of the protest movement, including universal suffrage and an investigation into the Hong Kong police, are not to be forgotten. Protesters, who included the elderly and children and some of whom were carrying banners calling for the end of the Chinese Communist Party, said their fight must go on despite several key successes for the movement. Voters in district elections overwhelmingly chose pro-democracy candidates who now control 17 out of Hong Kong's 18 electoral districts, widely seen as a resounding message of support for the pro-democracy cause. President Donald Trump has also signed into law a bill designed to support pro-democracy protesters … [Read more...] about Tear gas returns to Hong Kong as police disperse authorized protest march

Branson drops Air France deal to keep control of Virgin Atlantic
U.K. billionaire Richard Branson said he's scrapping the planned sale of a stake in Virgin Atlantic Airways in favor of retaining control and expanding the airline he founded. Branson has reached a deal to abandon a two-year-old plan to sell part of the airline to Air France-KLM Group and will hang on to the 31% stake, keeping a 51% holding overall, he said in a letter to staff posted on his personal blog Monday. The accord is "subject to contract," he said. Air France-KLM had agreed to buy the stake for about 220 million pounds ($284 million) in 2017 as part of a three-way venture with Delta Air Lines, which already owned 49% of Virgin Atlantic. The revenue and cost-sharing pact is unaffected by the decision to pull the sale and will be implemented "in the near future," Virgin said separately. A final agreement with Air France-KLM should be reached in the next few weeks, people familiar with the negotiations told Bloomberg earlier. The Paris-based company declined to comment. SF supervisors opposed to Wiener’s housing-transit bill soften stance a bit
A bill by state Sen. Scott Wiener prompted a raucous debate at City Hall Monday, as progressive activists and westside homeowners attacked the core idea: that dense development near transit corridors will help solve a regional housing crisis. Leading the charge was Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who co-sponsored a resolution with three progressive colleagues — Hillary Ronen, Norman Yee and Sandra Lee Fewer — to oppose Wiener’s bill. They say it would impede the city’s ability to impose affordable housing quotas and other restrictions on developers. But when their resolution went before the supervisors’ Land Use and Transportation Committee Monday, Chairwoman Katy Tang, a moderate, persuaded Peskin to soften his stance. Instead of outright condemning Wiener’s proposal, the supervisors will call for amendments to help preserve the character of San Francisco’s neighborhoods. That compromise seemed designed to placate neighborhood associations in Cow … [Read more...] about SF supervisors opposed to Wiener’s housing-transit bill soften stance a bit
