Biden Drops Dr. Seuss from Read Across America Day

President Biden dropped Dr. Seuss from Read Across America Day, failing to mention the famed children’s author in his presidential proclamation  — a decision that coincided with six of the beloved author’s books being pulled from publication for “racist and insensitive” depictions. While both former President Obama and former President Trump included Dr. Seuss in their proclamations of the past, Biden bucked tradition and omitted any mention of the author or his legacy. “On this Read Across America Day, we celebrate the parents, educators, librarians, and other champions of reading who help launch our Nation’s children on that critical path,” the proclamation read in part, with no mention of the author, whose real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel. Similarly, a Virginia school system, Loudoun County Public Schools also omitted the books from its Read Across America lineup, citing racial “undertones” in the books. The omission comes as Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced its decision to cancel the publication of six popular Dr. Seuss books, including And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , If I Ran the Zoo , McElligot’s Pool , On Beyond Zebra! , Scrambled Eggs Super! , and The Cat’s Quizzer . “These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises told The Associated Press, claiming that ceasing sales reflects just “part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families.” The company said it made the decision after listening to feedback from its audience, which included teachers and “specialists in the field.” “We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalog of titles,” it said. Obama mentioned Dr. Seuss specifically in 2016, with the proclamation reading , “March 2 is also the birthday of one of America’s revered wordsmiths.  Theodor Seuss Geisel — or Dr. Seuss — used his ...

Dr. Seuss Is Canceled: Six Books Will Stop Being Published Because of ‘Racist and Insensitive Imagery’

Six popular Dr. Seuss books — including And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and If I Ran the Zoo — “will stop being published because of racist and insensitive imagery, the business that preserves and protects the author’s legacy said Tuesday,” The Associated Press reported. “These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises told The Associated Press in a statement marking the late author and illustrator’s birthday. “Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises said. The Associated Press reported that the “racist and insensitive” depictions played a part in their removal. The other books affected are McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer . The move to drop the six titles comes just 24-hours after a Virginia school system removed children’s books by Dr. Seuss from its annual Read Across America program over charges they have “strong racial undertones,” as Breitbart News reported . Dr. Seuss is now racist. Consider this your woke Cancel Culture warning in the event your children are spotted with copies and/or authorities find out you've read these stories to your children. https://t.co/f8LxJqC72t — Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) March 1, 2021 According to a school spokesman, the district said they are looking toward books that are more “inclusive and diverse and reflective of our student community.” On Monday, President Biden omitted Dr. Seuss from Read Across America Day – held annually on the children’s author’s birthday on March 2. Biden broke presidential tradition when he left out any mention of Dr. Seuss, while both former President Barack Obama and former President Donald Trump recognized Dr. Seuss’ contributions several times in their yearly proclamations. Books by Dr. Seuss — ...

Support Cuba’s emerging market economy by ending the blockade

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel recently announced the country’s most sweeping market liberalization in decades. The reforms are desperately needed: Cuba’s already stagnant economy has contracted 11 percent during the COVID-19 pandemic. U.S. policy makers should encourage further reform by liberalizing America’s trade relations with Cuba. Socialist economic systems are defined by state ownership and control of the major industries, businesses and resources. Cuban socialism is no exception. Until the recently announced reforms, private industry was restricted to only 127 types of businesses. The reforms replace that list with a list of 124 activities prohibited to private enterprise. Not surprisingly, politically sensitive industries such as education and the news media remain prohibited, as do other major sectors like health care and construction-related professions, including engineering and architecture. However, according to the Cuban government, the reforms will allow self-employment and private enterprises in more than 2,000 professions. ADVERTISEMENT Cuba has slowly allowed more private enterprise in tourist-related industries for years. Cubans were allowed to rent out rooms in their apartments to visitors starting in 1997 . Initially, no more than two rooms could be rented out and entrepreneurs could employ no one outside of their family in the rental business. These restrictions were later eliminated. Similarly, private restaurants were allowed in 1993, but initially were limited to 12 seats and prohibited from serving seafood and beef. In 2011 these restrictions were relaxed and the estimated number of private restaurants in Havana alone grew from 74 to more than 2,000 by 2015 . Reforms over the last decade have led to an estimated tripling of private-sector employment, to about 600,000 . When I was conducting research for the book “ Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way ...

Will Biden’s Immigration Policies Blunt Canada’s Tech Edge?

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA - As the United States loosens its immigration policies under President Joe Biden, leaders of Canada’s thriving tech sector may find they have to work a little harder to attract top international talent. “The effect of the Biden administration is not seen as yet,” says Toronto-based financial services executive Soumya Ghosh. Nevertheless, Canadian tech firms have been clear beneficiaries of America’s restrictive immigration policies under former President Donald Trump, finding themselves able to hire highly skilled workers from around the world who might otherwise have headed for jobs in the United States. The influx of skilled workers helped to make Toronto the fastest-growing center for technology jobs in North America in recent years, according to a January 2020 report by the U.S. business analysis firm CBRE, a global service and investment firm. Canada’s Pacific coast city of Vancouver also made the top five, along with San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Standouts in the Canadian tech sector include homegrown companies such as e-commerce company Shopify which says it supports 1.7 million businesses in 175 countries. The ease of hiring international talent has also made Canada more attractive to global giants such as Google which in February 2020 announced plans to triple its workforce in the country. While Trump's stated policy goal was to prioritize high-skilled workers under a "merit-based" immigration system, U.S. visa issuance fell for almost all categories of recipients during his administration, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic struck. The Biden administration said this week it has still not decided whether to extend a Trump-era temporary ban on new H-1B visas, the most commonly used visa under which highly skilled tech workers can come to the United States. But even if some immigration restrictions are lifted, analysts in Canada believe there are other reasons their sector will continue to attract top talent. ...

Psaki won’t say why Dr. Seuss was dropped from Biden reading proclamation

close Video Jen Psaki holds White House press briefing White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki wouldn’t say why President Biden dropped Dr. Seuss from "Read Across America Day," the annual celebration of reading in honor of the legendary children’s author. While Biden followed presidential tradition in proclaiming Tuesday "Read Across America Day," which falls on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday, he bucked his predecessors by leaving out any mention of Dr. Seuss from the proclamation. 6 DR. SEUSS BOOKS TO STOP BEING PUBLISHED BECAUSE OF RACIST IMAGERY When asked during the White House press briefing Tuesday why the president left out Dr. Seuss, Psaki punted to the Department of Education. "The proclamation was written by the Department of Education, and you could certainly speak to them about more specifics about the drafting of it," Psaki said. "But read Across America Day, which is, you're right, has not existed forever, has only been around for a short period of time, elevates and celebrates a love of reading among our nation's youngest leaders." 1959: Children's book author/illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel poses with models of some of the characters he has created. "And as we celebrate the love of reading uplift diverse and representative authors, it is especially important that we ensure all children can see themselves represented and celebrated, celebrated in the books that they read," Psaki said. ...
