A charming, historic house with a rock 'n' roll pedigree has hit the market for $22.5 million in Santa Monica, CA . Known as the Witbeck House, the delightful domicile dates back to 1917. That's when businessman Charles Witbeck decided to commission a two-story, shingle house that looked more at home on the East Coast than in California. Arts and Crafts architects Greene and Greene took on the task, creating three structures on the property: a main house, two-bedroom guesthouse, and two-story A-frame. Brothers Charles and Henry Greene were known for creating “ultimate bungalows,” including several landmark houses and buildings in Southern California—but no others in Santa Monica. 'Somebody's Baby' Over the years, the the Witbeck House has had several different owners, including musician Jackson Browne and actress Darryl Hannah . In fact, that A-frame structure was once a music studio for Browne. The chart-topping artist is known for such hits as "Stay," … [Read more...] about Stay for Good? Pineapple and Ham Belong Together
Hiwa Rosario is celebrating Easter a week early this year. The actual holiday weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for her business, Farm to Jar . She’ll be setting up shop at Ward Centre in Honolulu to sell her coveted pineapple glazes, which her customers buy to deck out their holiday hams. The balanced combination of tangy, sweet fruit and salty, savory pork is, she said, “a perfect union.” Pineapple and ham belong together — on Easter tables and, yes, on pizza. They look alike, too: When scored for roasting, the ham’s diamond pattern mimics the pineapple’s quilted peel, nature’s manifestation of the golden spiral . Early 20th-century recipes for ham with pineapple — like the ones that appeared in women’s magazine ads for Hawaiian Pineapple Company , now known as Dole — are still beloved today. Rosy ham, bejeweled with rings of canned pineapple, whole cloves and maraschino cherries, is a classic. But that doesn’t mean it’s not due for an edit. … [Read more...] about Pineapple and Ham Belong Together

Guests sit around her sprawling dining-room table, chant Sabbath prayers and start the meal dipping homemade challah into a simple bowl of hard-boiled eggs and sautéed onions. Recipe: Egg and Onion Called “eier mit tsibeles” in Yiddish, it’s a recipe from Ms. Goldberg’s paternal grandmother, Shendel Hansky, who arrived in Melbourne in the 1920s from the former Brest-Litovsk, on the Polish-Belarusian border. “My bubbe used to make it and then taught it to our Greek housekeeper, Pat Diamond,” Ms. Goldberg, 58, said. “I just remember coming in from school and watching how Pat grated the eggs, then mixed them into the onions with her hands, how it smelled and how it looked.” Some versions of the dish … [Read more...] about This Passover Egg Dish Always Has a Place at the Table
