Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 After near-record wet weather this month , California officials announced Thursday that they plan to significantly increase water deliveries from state-managed reservoirs, including Lake Oroville, a move likely to help ease water shortages in many communities across the state. The California Department of Water Resources estimates that it will provide 30% of the water requested by municipal and agricultural water agencies this year, up from the 5% projected in early December. While still below demand, the allocation, if it holds, would be the most water provided since 2019. The announcement provides at least some relief for cities and towns reliant on state water shipments, which include several in Santa Clara County, the East Bay’s Tri-Valley and Napa County. Many areas have been scrambling to find new water supplies while eyeing the possibility of more cuts for customers out of fear of … [Read more...] about California boosts water deliveries to highest level in years thanks to storms

Endangered fox seen in California park for first time in nearly 100 years
An endangered species was recently observed prowling through the steep, rocky terrain near Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in California for the first time in nearly a century. Trail cameras used by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife detected four sightings of at least one Sierra Nevada red fox near Taboose Pass from April 20 to June 4, 2022, according to a press release shared by the agency Tuesday. Though the snapshots provide just a glimpse of the federally endangered canine’s evening whereabouts, the sightings prove groundbreaking for researchers who are looking to find ways to bolster their tiny population. “When a species is listed as endangered, the most common scenario we see is that it doesn’t recover,” Julia Lawson, an environmental scientist for the agency, told SFGATE by phone Wednesday. “It’s really hard to recover an endangered species when you know so little about them. Knowing where they occur and what habitats are important to them will help … [Read more...] about Endangered fox seen in California park for first time in nearly 100 years

Asian-American Artists, Now Activists, Push Back Against Hate
Early in the pandemic, word started to travel among Asian-American artists: racist attacks were on the rise. Jamie Chan told a fellow artist, Kenneth Tam , about getting kicked out of an Uber pool ride by the driver who noticed her sniffling. Anicka Yi , an artist based in New York, called Christine Y. Kim , a curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to talk about being spit at on a Manhattan street; Kim, in turn, recounted being accosted in a Whole Foods parking lot. Tam decided to start recording these incidents in a Google spreadsheet he named “We Are Not COVID.” It circulated on social media first among arts communities, then to wider audiences. Over the last several months, the document has filled up with reports ranging from microaggressions to outright violence. “I had assumed that things like this were going to start happening, but not so quickly, and not to people I knew,” Tam said in a phone interview. “It made me realize that I needed to educate … [Read more...] about Asian-American Artists, Now Activists, Push Back Against Hate
Three Ways to Finish a Tub of Miso
This week, I frantically sent some friends the following message: “If you found MONTHS old expired cream cheese in your fridge, but it tasted and smelled normal, would you eat it? y/n.” (Spoiler: I ate it.) My cooking can, at times, be shortsighted. I’ll get jazzed to make a recipe with few plans for any of the leftover ingredients, leaving me with half-full containers that I inevitably forget about. But there’s one item in my fridge that can stand the test of time: my tub of shiro, or white, miso . Miso paste is fermented, and its high salt content protects it from mold. Depending on whom you ask, miso paste will last in the fridge for anywhere between six to 18 months. I’ve used some far older than that, and I’m still here to write this newsletter. But if you would like to avoid sending a panicked text asking if your miso is safe, here are a few ways to use it up. Soups : Recipes for soup often call for adding the miso near the end of cooking, off heat. To … [Read more...] about Three Ways to Finish a Tub of Miso
