Can a Nap Make Up for a Bad Night of Sleep?
Q: If I get less than the recommended seven or eight hours of sleep every night, will a midday nap make up for that loss? Maybe you stayed up too late scrolling TikTok, or tossed and turned because of anxious thoughts . And now you’re wondering if a quick lunchtime nap will give you the energy boost you need to power through the rest of the day, and potentially regain the health benefits of a full night’s sleep you may have lost. It’s important to understand that while a midday nap will probably replenish your energy enough to get you through your day, said Rebecca Spencer, a sleep science researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, it won’t necessarily negate the health risks that may come with insufficient sleep at night. Here’s why. The health benefits of good sleep According to 2020 survey data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of adults in the United States don’t get the recommended seven hours or more of sleep every … [Read more...] about Can a Nap Make Up for a Bad Night of Sleep?
Cuba: Sham ‘Elections’ Make 91-Year-Old Raúl Castro, Elián González Lawmakers
The Cuban Communist Party held “elections” on Sunday in which 470 hand-picked candidates vied for 470 seats in the National People’s Power Assembly, the national lawmaking body — meaning every candidate was guaranteed a seat. No opposition candidates appeared on the ballot and several regional “elections” boasted some of the country’s most well-known and powerful political figures. Among those gifted lawmaking seats on Sunday were former dictator Raúl Castro, 91, and Elián González, a communist celebrity best known in the United States as a child refugee deported at gunpoint by leftist President Bill Clinton in 2000. The official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba, Granma , quietly announced Castro’s plans to return to public office in February with little explanation as to why. Castro, for decades the closest ally of his brother and fellow dictator Fidel Castro, officially retired from in 2021 from the presidency and the far more powerful position of chairman of the … [Read more...] about Cuba: Sham ‘Elections’ Make 91-Year-Old Raúl Castro, Elián González Lawmakers
Athletes from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to compete, IOC says
GENEVA — Some Russian athletes can soon return to international sports, although their status for next year’s Paris Olympics is still up in the air. The International Olympic Committee recommended Tuesday that individual athletes from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to return to competition under a neutral status as long as they have no military links. But the IOC, facing increased pressure to ban Russia and Belarus from the Paris Olympics because of the war in Ukraine, held off on deciding whether they can compete at next year’s Summer Games. That decision will be taken “at the appropriate time,” IOC President Thomas Bach said. When it comes to other events, including Olympic qualifiers, it will be up to each individual sport’s governing body to make the final decision on whether Russian and Belarusian athletes can take part. IOC delays picking 2030 Winter Games host city due to climate concerns Dec. 15, 2022 04:11 While the … [Read more...] about Athletes from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to compete, IOC says
Moses Sumney and Perfume Genius: Complex Voices of Desire
Sexual desire is always complicated. It’s a profoundly individual tangle of physical and psychological actions and responses, and it’s inseparable from flesh and circumstance, from instinct and memory and culture. It grows even more complex when those desires are seen as abnormal, outside the mainstream, unacceptable or even immoral — attitudes that an adolescent can internalize and an adult can struggle to outgrow. By coincidence, two songwriters who have braved those subjects, and who continue to explore a complex spectrum of queer desire, released new albums last Friday. Moses Sumney ’s “Grae,” a 20-track magnum opus, is his second album. “Set My Heart on Fire Immediately” is the fifth studio album by Mike Hadreas, who records as Perfume Genius . Both Sumney and Hadreas are intense, fervent singers, with voices that reach from baritone and tenor up to pearly, richly androgynous falsettos. And for both of them, musical styles and structures are mutable and conditional, not … [Read more...] about Moses Sumney and Perfume Genius: Complex Voices of Desire
As if Becoming a Vampire Isn’t Bad Enough
In the new film “Lace Crater,” a young woman named Ruth has a one-night stand with a ghost named Michael. She catches something, and soon her body is covered in goo and she’s puking black ooze. We last see her pale and wrapped in a blanket, Michael by her side. We’ll get to how one obtains a supernatural lover in minute. But first: lace crater? Harrison Atkins, who wrote and directed the film, elaborated: “Lace is this word associated with traditional femininity that has to do with sexual shame,” he said. “Crater is this word that evokes an impact or an absence left after an impact. I think of the lace crater as this void that’s left in the world after Ruth disappears in it.” A meet-cute comedy mixed with Brooklyn ghost story, “Lace Crater,” with an opening date of July 29, is the latest entry in the horror genre’s long fixation on sexually transmitted diseases. Intimacy, illness and stigma have been ingredients of “It Follows” (2015), about a sexually transmitted condition … [Read more...] about As if Becoming a Vampire Isn’t Bad Enough
