Despite nearly drowning in a pool when he was 3 or 4, the perfumer Barnabé Fillion tries to take a swim in Paris, where he’s based for part of each year, whenever he feels a headache coming on. “Water, for me, is a way to transform,” says Fillion, 41, who has synesthesia, a condition in which one’s senses are cross-wired: In Fillion’s case, he experiences images and sounds as textures. “If I’m really saturated, water will help me. There’s something about it that makes me feel light and happy and fuzzy.” His latest scent, Manta, is meant to evoke the sensation of being underwater. It’s the fourth fragrance from Arpa , the brand Fillion launched last year, its offerings recognizable by their colored glass bottles, which are handblown by the artist Jochen Holz . Unlike the line’s other scents, however, which were inspired by memorable destinations to which Fillion has traveled — the Dallol region of Ethiopia, a Belgian forest and the hot springs of … [Read more...] about For Barnabé Fillion, Fragrance Is a Multisensory Affair

Wimbledon updates | Iga Swiatek takes winning streak to 37
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — The Latest from Wimbledon (all times local): ___ 5:55 p.m. Top-ranked Iga Swiatek took her winning streak to 37 matches by beating Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Swiatek won on No. 1 Court to make her winning run the longest since Martina Hingis also won 37 matches in a row in 1997. This victory, though, was far from easy for the Polish player — despite facing a player ranked 138th. Swiatek had to save two break points in the opening game of the third set, then secured the decisive breakthrough with a slice of luck. At 2-1, Swiatek earned a break point when her Dutch opponent deliberately let a shot fly past her at the net, thinking it would sail long. However, it landed inside the baseline, and Swiatek then hit a forehand winner on the next point to break for a 3-1 lead. Swiatek won her second French Open title this month but has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon. ___ 3:40 … [Read more...] about Wimbledon updates | Iga Swiatek takes winning streak to 37
Biden: Court ruling on Roe ‘destabilizing,’ US still leading
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 MADRID (AP) — President Joe Biden said Thursday that the Supreme Court's decision ending a constitutional right to abortion is “destabilizing," but he maintained the ruling does not affect U.S. standing on the world stage as he took credit for modernizing the transatlantic alliance to adapt to new threats from Russia and China. Biden was speaking to reporters at the conclusion of a five-day foreign trip to huddle with NATO allies in Madrid and the leaders of the Group of Seven advanced democratic economies in the Bavarian Alps, which came as the nation was still grappling with the fallout from Friday's Supreme Court decision. “America is better positioned to lead the world than we ever have been,” Biden said. “But one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of United States in overruling not only Roe v. Wade, but essentially … [Read more...] about Biden: Court ruling on Roe ‘destabilizing,’ US still leading

Annie Lennox beguiled us in the MTV age. Now she calms us down online.
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 LOS ANGELES - The day she found out that her group Eurythmics had its first No. 1 single in America, Annie Lennox was at a hotel in San Francisco. The hotel was Japanese-inspired, and its windows appeared to have a rice-paper-like translucency. Lennox was already beginning to struggle with the early onset of fame-related anxiety, and this didn't help. "It felt like I had nowhere to hide," Lennox says now. "I was so conscious of earthquakes, because I had never really been to San Francisco before. Maybe once. And I was just thinking, 'Oh my God, I feel so vulnerable. Now we've got rice-paper windows and earthquakes happening.' It was like being naked in front of the world." The single that kick-started the duo's pathbreaking, almost decade-long run up the pop charts - the galvanic synth-pop classic "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" - will turn 40 next year. In the run-up … [Read more...] about Annie Lennox beguiled us in the MTV age. Now she calms us down online.
‘Marcel the Shell’ made it to the big screen by staying small
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Crafted out of a hermit crab shell, a googly eye and a pair of pink Polly Pocket tennis shoes, Marcel the Shell leaves an outsize impression that belies his one-inch stature. Dean Fleischer Camp realized as much in the summer of 2010, when the first audience was introduced to the stop-motion character's trembling timbre and infectious positivity. After promising he'd make a video for a friend's Brooklyn comedy show, the filmmaker got his then-partner, "Saturday Night Live" alum Jenny Slate, to riff in character as a minuscule mollusk in a big world. (One quip: "Guess what I do for adventure? I hang-glide on a Dorito.") Dropping Slate's voice in Marcel's roughly sketched mouth, Camp delivered a three-minute mockumentary that played as amusing, absurdist and, to his surprise, delightfully disarming. "It was kind of an arty, judgmental crowd there, so I was not expecting them to melt … [Read more...] about ‘Marcel the Shell’ made it to the big screen by staying small
