(AP) — Hershel W. “Woody” Williams, the last remaining Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, whose heroics under fire over several crucial hours at the Battle of Iwo Jima made him a legend in his native West Virginia, died Wednesday. He was 98. Williams' foundation announced on Twitter and Facebook that he died at the Veterans Affairs medical center bearing his name in Huntington. “Today, America lost not just a valiant Marine and a Medal of Honor recipient, but an important link to our Nation’s fight against tyranny in the Second World War,” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement. “I hope every American will pause to reflect on his service and that of an entire generation that sacrificed so much to defend the cause of freedom and democracy.” As a young Marine corporal, Williams went … [Read more...] about Last remaining WWII Medal of Honor recipient dies at 98

Why Is Chris Pratt Lying About His Religious Past?
In one of the most shocking rebrands of 2022—maybe second after “inclusive” M&M’s — Jurassic World actor and famous follower of Christ Chris Pratt walked back claims that he’s a “religious person” in a new cover story for Men’s Health after years of telling the public otherwise. Much of the magazine profile, published on Wednesday, focuses on Pratt’s maligned presence on Twitter, including his frequent title as “the worst Chris” out of all the Hollywood Chrises and accusations that his politics are, at the very least, Republican-adjacent . The Guardians of the Galaxy star points to a speech he made at the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2018 as his Annoying, Evangelical White Man internet reputation began to take hold. “God is real,” he said, accepting the Generation Award. “God loves you. God wants the best for you. Believe that. I do.” In the four years since, Pratt has seemingly managed to grasp why certain viewers were put off by this televangelist stunt (and … [Read more...] about Why Is Chris Pratt Lying About His Religious Past?
Stop posting about “camping,” Colorado abortion advocates say — and get involved these ways instead
Abortion advocates want Coloradans moved to action by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn of Roe v. Wade to know there are many ways to help in the fight for women’s reproductive rights, but some options could do more harm than good. Employees with Cobalt, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization focused on bridging access to reproductive health care, advised on the best — as well as potentially harmful — ways people can get involved in fighting for safe access to abortions, which remain legal in Colorado after the legislature enshrined the right to an abortion in state law. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, trigger laws in 13 states — Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming — went into effect, criminalizing abortion in those states immediately or in the near future. Colorado is surrounded by states restricting or banning abortions, making it a popular … [Read more...] about Stop posting about “camping,” Colorado abortion advocates say — and get involved these ways instead
LIV Golf comes to U.S., but it’s not compelling sports theater on any level
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 At some point, if the moral outrage subsides (it shouldn’t) and the eye-popping payouts fade into the background, this will become mostly about golf. The players. The actual competition. And that doesn’t shape up as especially appetizing, either. The LIV Golf Invitational Series makes its United States debut Thursday outside Portland, Ore. Three weeks ago, when the inaugural event was held near London, Charl Schwartzel held off Hennie du Plessis to win. Boy, that was riveting. Oh, wait, you don’t remember? Greg Norman and his rogue tour obviously can’t claim the ethical high ground. Not when its funding comes from Saudi Arabia, widely known for rampant human-rights abuses. Not when this looks, feels and smells like a blatant attempt at “sportswashing.” Norman’s bold, distasteful venture also can’t claim any sort of golf high ground. Not when its highest-profile player … [Read more...] about LIV Golf comes to U.S., but it’s not compelling sports theater on any level

Vladimir Putin Taunts G7 Leaders: They Would Look ‘Disgusting’ Topless
Western leaders who mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin’s propensity to be photographed topless have been met with the riposte they would look “disgusting” if they tried to emulate his bare-torso bravado. AP reports Putin hit back during a visit to Turkmenistan early Thursday when asked about Western leaders taunting him at the G7 summit. As they sat down for talks, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson jested G7 leaders could go topless to flex their muscles amid Russia-West tensions over Moscow’s military action in Ukraine, as Breitbart News reported . Canada’s leader Justin Trudeau suggested they wait for the official picture before disrobing but then Johnson quipped “We have to show that we’re tougher than Putin” and the japes kept rolling. “We’re going to get the bare-chested horseback riding display,” Trudeau said, referring to Putin’s infamous 2009 photo-op of himself riding shirtless on a horse and fishing bare-chested.
