Black Atlantans Terrorized by Memphis PD Chief’s Old Unit Speak Out: ‘They’d Beat Your Ass’

February 3, 2023 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

When the video of Tyre Nichols’ brutal beating by Memphis police was released to the public a week ago, many—including Nichols’ family—applauded Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis’ swift action in firing the officers involved in his beating, calling it a blueprint for police accountability moving forward. Davis had recently been seen as a figure willing to speak out for police reform, even to the Senate , following the murder of George Floyd and as a president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. But to some Atlantans, the beating of Nichols by members of Davis’ newly created (and now disbanded) SCORPION unit in Memphis reminded them of their own violent experience at the hands of another unit Davis commanded in the early 2000’s: the REDDOGs. And others have questioned whether she had learned from past mistakes when she created the SCORPION unit in Memphis to crack down on violence. “She took that same intent down… there and created a whole … [Read more...] about Black Atlantans Terrorized by Memphis PD Chief’s Old Unit Speak Out: ‘They’d Beat Your Ass’

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 BRUSSELS (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Friday that industrialized countries in the Group of Seven are imposing a price cap on refined Russian oil products such as diesel and kerosene, as part of a coalition that includes Australia and a tentative agreement from the European Union. The cap follows similar price limits put on Russian oil exports, with the goal of reducing the financial resources Russian President Vladimir Putin has to wage the nearly year-long war in Ukraine. “Today’s agreement builds on the price cap on Russian crude oil exports that we set in December and helps advance our goals of limiting Russia’s key revenue generator in funding its illegal war while promoting stable global energy markets,” Yellen said in a statement. On Friday, EU governments tentatively agreed to set a $100-per-barrel price cap on sales of Russian diesel to … [Read more...] about G-7, Europe reach deal for price cap on Russian diesel

The building, just off Main Street in Eagle Lake, TX , has come on the market with a list price of $1,650,000. “It was built in 1912 and, throughout its life, it has been a hotel at least twice and then a restaurant. And the individual who owns it now is using it as a single-family residence,” says Tim Grimes of Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty, who is co-listing the property with Brian Spack . “There are so many possibilities somebody could do with this. If somebody has an imagination and is creative, it could be something really special,” Grimes adds. Built for rail travelers Published reports say a hotel building has been on the site since the Good Hotel was built for rail travelers in 1858. At one point, Bill and Helyn Farris restored and operated the hotel for 20 years. Bill died in 2012, and records show the … [Read more...] about $1.6M Texas Hotel Is Looking for a Buyer To Check In

THE PHILOSOPHER GEORGE SANTAYANA was once asked which books young people should read. It didn't matter, he replied, as long as they read the same ones. Generations of Eng. lit. majors in American colleges followed his advice. You started with the Bible, moved briskly through Beowulf and Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton, the 18th-century novel, the Romantics, a few big American books like … [Read more...] about ON CAMPUS: THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Review: Stafford-Jutz album brings to life forgotten voices

February 3, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

“Lost Voices,” Tim Stafford & Thomm Jutz (Mountain Fever) “Lost Voices” features new songs written in the past tense, and serves as an engaging soundtrack to neglected chapters in American history. The album comes from the formidable singer-storyteller team of Tim Stafford, best known for his work with the bluegrass band Blue Highway, and Thomm Jutz, a classically trained native of Germany whose music is classically Americana. As the album title suggests, Stafford and Jutz sought to bring to life forgotten voices, among them a vaudeville star, Appalachian women, Navajo code talkers and Black baseball barnstormers. There’s an ode to trees and a lovely spiritual, while morality tales of an outlaw and a family feud litter the lyrics with bodies. Stafford and Jutz pair carefully crafted images and details with equally vivid melodies. While a few songs feature a full bluegrass combo, the duo’s handsome, intertwined vocals and acoustic guitar work carry the set as they explore … [Read more...] about Review: Stafford-Jutz album brings to life forgotten voices
