FAIRFIELD, CT — Costs continue to climb as Fairfield responds to the fallout after two town employees and a former contractor were charged with environmental crimes related to the management of the Fairfield fill pile and contamination was uncovered at sites across town. Testing and remediation expenses are expected to exceed the $1.8 million transferred in October by the Board of Finance to pay for the costs, Conservation Director Brian Carey — who has also been serving as the interim public works superintendent — told board members Tuesday. The ongoing contamination testing and remediation has been underway for months, with more than 70 sites tested so far, Carey said. "Until we get in the field and dig it out and get confirmation samples, I don't know what the final bills are going to be on some things," he said, noting the town is seeing overages on certain components of the contamination response. A document provided to the board outlined more than $1.4 million … [Read more...] about Contamination Costs Climb In Fairfield As Over 70 Sites Tested

S.F. gets 1st glimpse at new Transbay center’s skin
The panel dangling from a forklift is 6 by 6 feet, aluminum punched by angled perforations in a not-quite-abstract pattern. It wears three coats of white paint. Flecks of mica add a hint of sheen. It’s one panel — and the final version — of the 4,486 that next spring will begin to cloak San Francisco’s new quarter-mile-long Transbay Transit Center. Right now that structure is a slow-growing frame of steel columns and beams. By late 2017 it should be open for business. [SEE BEFORE AND AFTER DESIGNS] “This is a single panel. The next step will be to fabricate and connect 18 of them” as a test of how multiple panels look side by side, said Darin Cook a senior associate principal at Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. “This will give us a chance to look at every detail before the fabricators go hog wild.” Cook’s firm designed the Transbay Transit Center being erected south of Mission Street between Beale and Second streets. It’s a … [Read more...] about S.F. gets 1st glimpse at new Transbay center’s skin
SpaceX will launch genetically enhanced ‘mighty mice’ to the International Space Station
New York (CNN Business)Elon Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, will launch a spacecraft loaded with 5,700 pounds of supplies — including a group of genetically enhanced 'mighty mice' — to the International Space Station on Thursday. The SpaceX Dragon capsule will fly to orbit atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida shortly at 12:30 pm ET on Thursday. It's slated to link up with the space station on Sunday. The mission was scheduled to take off on Wednesday, but rough winds in the upper atmosphere caused a one-day delay. The mice, from the nonprofit Jackson Laboratory in Maine, have genes manipulated to enhance their muscle growth. They'll help scientists understand how to limit muscle and bone loss in humans while they're in space, and they'll add to a long history of rodent research aboard the ISS. Other research supplies aboard the SpaceX flight will support a hodgepodge of experiments, including those that will test basic theories of gravity, how fire … [Read more...] about SpaceX will launch genetically enhanced ‘mighty mice’ to the International Space Station
Brazilian immigrants have it hard in Japan. Can music be a solution?
The three music teachers — armed with a violin, a guitar and a drum — are ready for class. But the elementary school students jump around the room, screaming and laughing.“Quiet! Stand up straight!” one teacher shouts.“OK,” another says. “Who remembers this song? Leticia — silence! Kenji, come on, we’re gonna make music.”The scene plays out at a school in Tokyo’s industrial hinterland, but all the chatter is in Portuguese. The students and teachers are Brazilian, and the music includes samba and bossa nova. Advertisement The class is part of a project called “Music Without Borders,” the brainchild of Rafael Kinoshita, a 35-year-old Brazilian who endured a difficult childhood here as an outsider and believes music can help spare his students from that kind of distress.Japan has long considered itself the unique homeland of a single race: the Japanese. But when the economy faced an industrial labor shortage … [Read more...] about Brazilian immigrants have it hard in Japan. Can music be a solution?
