CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — During orientation at Harvard Divinity School here in 2013, Angie Thurston wandered amid the tables set up by the various campus ministries. Catholic, Methodist, Muslim — they mostly served to reinforce the sense that Ms. Thurston did not fit into an organized religion. Here she was, starting her graduate studies in religion when she did not know the definition of liturgy, had never read the Bible and could not have identified a major theologian like Karl Barth, even if it would have won her a fortune on “Jeopardy!” Yet something in organized religion hinted at an answer to the atomized, unmoored life she led. “I didn’t feel unwelcome, but I did feel like it was a call to creativity,” Ms. Thurston, 30, recalled of her initiation. “I wanted to respond to what I saw as a crisis of isolation among young people.” She added, “I wanted to create a meaningful community that came together based on a shared goal rather than a shared religious creed.” From such … [Read more...] about Secular, but Feeling a Call to Divinity School

T he last stranger Adriene Mishler hugged before the pandemic was a woman who may or may not have sideswiped her car. It was Friday, the 13th of March, and Mishler, a YouTube yoga celebrity with more than eight million subscribers, was driving back to her house in Austin, Texas. It was exactly a week after the city canceled the annual South by Southwest festival. A female driver in a tan or gold sedan scraped the side of Mishler’s vehicle and, instead of pulling over like a decent person, raced off. The yoga guru gave chase. “I was not going to chew them out,” Mishler said a few weeks later, reflecting on the incident. “I didn’t give a [expletive] about exchanging insurance or anything — well, obviously I did.” But that wasn’t the point of catching the driver. The point was to have a conversation with that person about the importance of goodness and accountability … [Read more...] about The Reigning Queen of Pandemic Yoga

A SoulCycle Instructor Got the Vaccine as an ‘Educator’
For Stacey Griffith, a New York City-based SoulCycle instructor whose highly sought-after spin classes are often studded with celebrities, securing a vaccine dose was simple enough: She filled out some paperwork, and on Friday made the hour drive from Manhattan to a coronavirus vaccination site on Staten Island. But after posting on Instagram about her vaccination — and telling a reporter from The Daily Beast that her role as a fitness instructor made her eligible for the vaccine as an educator — Ms. Griffith quickly became the subject of a ferocious backlash. On social media, commenters questioned how a famously fit 52-year-old was able to secure a place in line ahead of essential workers and at-risk seniors. The outcry came as officials across the nation struggle to respond to racial and … [Read more...] about A SoulCycle Instructor Got the Vaccine as an ‘Educator’
Uyghur Activists Demand Xi Jinping’s Arrest After ICC Issues Warrant for Putin
The East Turkistan Government in Exile, an organization that represents the occupied region where the Chinese Communist Party is currently engaging in genocide, demanded this weekend that the International Criminal Court (ICC) issue an arrest warrant for Xi Jinping in recognition of that genocide. The ICC, an international agency with no enforcement mechanism, issued a similar warrant on Friday for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, charging him with war crimes in Ukraine. The ICC specifically cited reports of forced mass transfers of children out of Ukraine into Russian-occupied territory as a war crime as per international legal standards. “It is forbidden by international law for occupying powers to transfer civilians from the territory they live in to other territories,” ICC President Judge Piotr Hofmański said in a statement announcing the warrant. Russia is not a signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which created the ICC and grants it … [Read more...] about Uyghur Activists Demand Xi Jinping’s Arrest After ICC Issues Warrant for Putin
