OF ARMS AND ARTISTS The American Revolution Through Painters’ Eyes A REVOLUTION IN COLOR The World of John Singleton Copley One chilly December day in 1818, a skeptical John Adams entered Boston’s Faneuil Hall to view a painting. In his opinion, artists who depicted grand historical scenes, such as the image he had come to see, often distorted the truth and in so doing “conspir’d against the Rights of Mankind.” Adams did not report his reaction to this particular picture, but he almost certainly disapproved. The painting in question was John Trumbull’s “The Declaration of Independence,” which currently hangs in the rotunda of the United States Capitol. Trumbull’s representations of key Revolutionary events, along with portraits by Trumbull and his contemporaries of such figures as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere — and, yes, John Adams — now enjoy iconic status as a visual record of America’s founding. These images testify to the talents of a remarkable coterie … [Read more...] about Examining the Artists of the Revolutionary Era

‘It Needs You’: The Human Side to Boulez’s Demanding Music
Pierre Boulez, one of the most commanding musicians of the past century, must have been asked countless times, before his death in 2016 , what he thought his legacy might be. It was a mark of his stature that he had so much to choose from . Perhaps his work as a conductor , one of rare clarifying power? Perhaps his visionary inspiration as an institution builder , in his native France and elsewhere? Perhaps his polemical writings ? But when pushed, he would often point to his formidable, intricately constructed compositions. “Performances are transient, you know,” Boulez said in an interview in 1999. “That’s just something which happened, and you are happy sometimes. But, I mean, that’s not the main fact in my life. I would like that my works survive myself, that’s all.” Will they? And with what impact? Boulez can no longer promote them himself after all, and some of his most illustrious champions — Daniel Barenboim , Maurizio Pollini — are sadly starting to … [Read more...] about ‘It Needs You’: The Human Side to Boulez’s Demanding Music

There is a sputtering at the back of the arena—a miniaturized flying saucer, spitting smoke and sparks and lurching along a wire. When it reaches a point above the stage, one's attention is shifted to a huge “hat” that has been suspended there all along. To portentous music, a far larger version of the saucer descends from the hat, exhaust spewing from its thrusters. Finally to flashing lights … [Read more...] about Joyous Musical ‘jivation’ With the P‐Funkadelics
Rap artist Afroman sued by officers who raided his home
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 WINCHESTER, Ohio (AP) — Seven law enforcement officers have sued rap artist Afroman, accusing him of improperly using footage from a police raid on his Ohio home last year in his music videos. Four deputies, two sergeants and a detective with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office brought the suit earlier this month, claiming invasion of privacy. Other law enforcement officers who were involved in the raid are not named as plaintiffs. The plaintiffs say the rapper, whose real name is Joseph Foreman, took footage of their faces obtained during the August 2022 raid and used it in music videos and social media posts without their consent. They say that has caused them “emotional distress, embarrassment, ridicule, loss of reputation and humiliation." The plaintiffs are seeking all of Foreman’s profits from his use of their personas. That includes proceeds from the songs, music videos and … [Read more...] about Rap artist Afroman sued by officers who raided his home

John Adams on Boulez, a Composer Worth Wrestling With
“Boulez is perfect,” a composer friend said to me with a resigned shrug sometime in the late 1970s. My friend, an American, had just returned from a residency at Ircam, the state-of-the-art electronic music center Pierre Boulez had then recently created in Paris. His shrug said as much as his words. The air of perfection that surrounded Boulez, who died in 2016 at 90 , was daunting. There seemed to be nothing at which he didn’t excel: composing his dense, detailed, exquisitely honed music; conducting Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival; leading the New York Philharmonic; making revelatory recordings; founding, in Ircam and the Ensemble Intercontemporain, both a research laboratory and a virtuosic modern orchestra. And teaching, as we find in “Music Lessons,” a new English translation of 16 lectures he gave at the Collège de France between 1976 and 1995. Readers can now take stock of the daunting, demanding Boulezian worldview and, whether they warm to his own works or not, appreciate … [Read more...] about John Adams on Boulez, a Composer Worth Wrestling With
