US commander says evidence hasn’t corroborated intelligence of Russian bounties on US troops

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan says in a new interview that he has not seen evidence to corroborate claims that Russian officials placed bounties on U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East. Speaking with NBC News, Gen. Frank McKenzie said that reports in The New York Times and other media outlets indicating that U.S. intelligence officials were investigating reports that Russia was offering bounties to Taliban fighters for targeting U.S. service members had not been corroborated by evidence he had seen personally. "It just has not been proved to a level of certainty that satisfies me," Gen. McKenzie told NBC News, adding, "We continue to look for that evidence. I just haven't seen it yet. But ... it's not a closed issue." Report: Bill Belichick Can’t Stop Raving About Cam Newton, A ‘Significant Possibility’ To Return At QB For Patriots

BOSTON (CBS) — Late in the 2020 season, as Cam Newton’s streak without throwing a touchdown pass reached four weeks for the second time of the year, Bill Belichick defiantly and definitively rebuffed any and all questions about the possibility of making a change at quarterback. We’re now getting some idea of why. Belichick apparently loved working with Newton, so much so that there’s a “significant possibility” that the Patriots give the veteran QB another year in New England. READ MORE: US Probing Engine Fires In Nearly 1.9 Million Toyota RAV4 SUVs That’s according to The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin, who reported over the weekend — both in print and on the radio — that Belichick holds fond feelings for Newton. “Bill Belichick’s praise for Cam Newton throughout the 2020 season wasn’t an act,” Volin wrote in the Globe . “Multiple sources who have spoken with Belichick this offseason said he does nothing but rave about Newton and the effort the quarterback put forth in 2020.” Volin added: “Belichick did seem to genuinely enjoy coaching Newton, and multiple sources said they would not be surprised to see Newton back with the Patriots, especially if he’s willing to take another cheap contract (though probably not minimum salary again).” Volin made sure to note that Belichick does have concerns about the strength — or lack thereof — of Newton’s throwing shoulder. That’s surely no small matter. Newton, however, was able to complete passes at a 65.8 percent rate, almost six points better than his career completion percentage of 60.1. And he averaged 7.2 yards per attempt, just 0.1 yards off his career average of 7.3. On WEEI , Volin expounded upon this reporting: READ MORE: Watch Live @ 10: Gov. NBA’s Jeremy Lin Refuses to Name Player Who Allegedly Called Him ‘Coronavirus’

As the NBA announces its plans to investigate allegations made Thursday by G-league player and NBA veteran Jeremy Lin that he was called an anti-Asian slur “on the court,” Lin has not publicly named the player or the game where the alleged incident happened. Lin used his Facebook page, which has 3.5 million followers, to post a long statement on anti-Asian racism in America. In his post, Lin spoke for all Asian-Americans, saying, “We are tired of Asian American kids growing up and being asked where they’re REALLY from, of having our eyes mocked, of being objectified as exotic or being told we’re inherently unattractive.” Taiwanese-American Lin, who is a forward for the Santa Cruz Warriors, also referred to alleged Asian bias in sports in his post, saying, “I want better for the next generation of Asian American athletes than to have to work so hard to just be ‘deceptively athletic,'” and added, “Being a 9 year NBA veteran doesn’t protect me from being called ‘coronavirus’ on the court.” Lin has a history of speaking on Asian-American bias. He was featured on NBC Sports’ “Race in America: A Candid Conversation” last week to speak on Asian bias in the U.S., and considers himself a role model for the Asian-American community. NBA sources told the Athletic on Friday the “G League is opening an investigation into guard Jeremy Lin’s statements that he has been called, ‘Coronavirus,’ on the G League court”: The NBA G League is opening an investigation into guard Jeremy Lin’s statements that he has been called, “Coronavirus,” on the G League court, source tells @TheAthletic @Stadium . Lin is playing for Golden State’s affiliate, Santa Cruz. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 27, 2021 Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr supported Lin’s statement, saying, “I applaud Jeremy for his words and echo his sentiments regarding racism against the Asian American community.” Kerr has echoed sentiments from left-leaning agendas before and ...

Nuggets Journal: Five players Denver should target ahead of March trade deadline

When Jamal Murray disclosed his feelings about the Nuggets’ interior defense in the aftermath of their chaotic loss to Washington on Thursday night, it was hard not to view it as a cry for help. “We lack a presence in the middle that can just deter layups,” he said. “I’m talking about drill layups. So that’s kind of frustrating.” Washington had 30 points in the paint in the second half alone, which was further evidence of an alarming trend. Inside of five feet, Nuggets opponents are converting nearly 67% of their shot attempts – the worst defensive mark in the league. Less than a month from the March 25 trade deadline, was Murray signaling to president of basketball operations Tim Connelly that he should be shopping for a bruiser? That, despite Nikola Jokic’s brilliance, he needed someone with more hops? In the immediate aftermath of their disastrous fourth-quarter breakdown, was Murray forgetting that both Paul Millsap (knee) and JaMychal Green (shoulder) were on the shelf with injuries? Did he consider that, at that point, Michael Porter Jr. had only started two games at power forward, which, along with the usual defensive concerns, meant a whole new set of responsibilities? Now 32 games into the season, the Nuggets have glaring holes to address at the trade deadline. And what’s unfortunate for Connelly is that he’s barely had a chance to evaluate his team while healthy. If it wasn’t Porter out with COVID in January, then it was Gary Harris and P.J. Dozier facing extended absences. Heading into Saturday’s game at Oklahoma City, Millsap had missed the last six games while Green was unavailable for the last three. All of which leaves Connelly in a place with imperfect information, yet saddled with the responsibilities of improving a team that’s underperformed in the first half of the season. Despite the expanded playoff field due to the play-in tournament, there will still be sellers ahead of the deadline. League sources expect Orlando, Houston, ...
