Christmas has come early for fans of “The Princess Diaries,” as a third installment of the franchise is in development. Aadrita Mukerji is writing up the third script of the iconic film franchise that launched Anne Hathaway’s career into the stratosphere, according to a Hollywood Reporter report published Tuesday. Thankfully, this won’t be a reboot or redesign of the original story, as sources have said the script follows on from the original series of films. The original film was based on a novel by Meg Cabot and earned $165.3 million globally in 2001, THR continued. The second installment of the franchise was released in 2004, bringing in $134.7 million, suggesting that it’s a big money-maker for the entertainment industry. It is one of the few reboots I certainly want to see as soon as humanly possible. There is no explicit deal for Hathaway to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, the film’s leading character whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she’s the heir … [Read more...] about REPORT: Iconic Disney Movie ‘The Princess Diaries’ To Get Another Sequel

Disney has two movies in theaters right now starring queer characters—but you’d be hard-pressed to name both of them. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , Michaela Coel plays a warrior with a female partner, a relationship given the most cursory of nods toward the end of the movie when the pair calls each other “love.” That feint toward sexual diversity is par for the course with Disney movies these days: sprinkle a little queerness in there for the folks at home, but not too much, so that it can be easily excised for the overseas release. (Either way, bigots are unhappy.) Very much not par for the course, though, is the other Disney movie with a queer hero playing this weekend. Strange World boasts not only a queer teen lead, voiced by IRL queer comedy icon Jaboukie Young-White , but that queer teen is also biracial. Between the explicit queerness and the interracial family at its center, Strange World is shockingly progressive—well, as far as Hollywood family films go. … [Read more...] about ‘Strange World’ Is Disney’s First Animated Movie With a Gay Lead. Robert Breer, an animator whose use of novel techniques to set lines and forms scrambling across the screen opened up a new language for film, died on Aug. 11 at his home in Tucson. He was 84. His death was confirmed by his wife, Kate Flax. Mr. Breer, a painter by training, turned to animation after making flip books and stop-action films based on the abstract paintings he produced while living and exhibiting in Paris in the 1950s. Early on, he saw the potential for breaking with the narrative sequences and anthropomorphic forms that defined the medium. In films like “Recreation” (1956), “A Man and His Dog Out for Air,” (1957), “69” (1968) and “Swiss Army Knife With Rats and Pigeons” (1980), viewers were bombarded with wiggling lines, letters, abstract shapes and live-action images that jumped and flashed, zoomed and receded, appeared and disappeared, inflicting what Mr. Breer once called “assault and battery on the retina.” “He was a seminal figure in the new … [Read more...] about Robert Breer, Pioneer of Avant-Garde Animation, Dies at 84
The Walt Disney Co. looks like it has another woke box office bomb on its hands. Strange World , the environmentally themed animated adventure featuring the studio’s first openly gay teen character in a cartoon feature, grossed a mere $800,000 in previews on Tuesday, signaling weak moviegoer interest headed into the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The movie was expected to gross $30 million to $40 million during the five-day weekend. But the dismal preview figure means Strange World will have trouble reaching that goal, with some reports estimating an opening weekend as low as $23 million. Since the movie cost a reported $180 million to make, Disney will have a tough time recouping its costs during its theatrical run. Strange World follows the adventures of the Clade family of explorers, who set out to save their civilization’s primary source of energy — a plant called the Pando — which has become endangered. Click here to read the full article. Hollywood has come to expect a few things around Thanksgiving: a hearty turkey dinner, plenty of family time… and a Disney movie to rule the box office. In keeping with tradition, the Magic Kingdom is poised to stuff the competition over the busy holiday weekend as “ Strange World ,” an animated adventure about a family of legendary explorers, opens in theaters. But it’s a leftover, Disney’s “ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ,” that’s expected to claim the No. 1 spot in North America. The superhero sequel looks to extend its reign as it aims to collect at least $40 million between Wednesday and Sunday. So far, “Wakanda Forever” has grossed a sizable $287 million at the domestic box office and $545 million globally.
