After Prime Minister Boris Johnson lost a vote to the Remainer-dominated House of Commons, the Europeans have said that a no deal Brexit is now more likely than ever. MPs voted on Tuesday night in favour of holding a vote on whether to make no deal Brexit illegal and force the government to ask the EU for a further Brexit delay, likely until January 31st, 2020.Those who voted to back the Remainer motion included 21 Tory rebels who were later expelled from the Conservative Party. Mr Johnson had warned his colleagues that to vote against the government would weaken his negotiating hand with Brussels while attempting to rewrite the terms of the withdrawal treaty. EU diplomatic sources have told The Times that they believe Johnson has “lost control” and any further negotiations on the backstop is “pointless” because no new bill would be supported in the Commons. “We can’t be sure that whatever were to come out of any talks will ever get anywhere. If we … [Read more...] about Deja Vu All over Again: EU Says No Deal ‘Never Been Closer’ – But Will It Grant Another Delay to Keep Hold of Britain?

Live every week like it’s infrastructure week. Photo: Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty Images President Trump’s long-belated, newly unveiled infrastructure plan is a work of magical realism. In an unprecedented move that is sure to polarize audiences, the White House has decided to set its legislative proposal in an alternative universe — one where the federal government can purchase $1.5 trillion worth of infrastructure improvements for just $200 billion; congressional Republicans are united in their commitment to funding public improvements and have detailed ideas for how to do so; and congressional Democrats are eager to vote for $200 billion in cuts to the safety net, for the sake of delivering Donald Trump a bipartisan victory in a midterm election year. This imaginative approach to policy making might be admirable, in the abstract, given how exhausted the genre has become. But if the administration’s experiment in speculative fiction had promise in theory, … [Read more...] about Trump’s Infrastructure ‘Plan’ Is Shoddily Built – and Sure to Collapse

BOULDER, CO - From University of Colorado Boulder: A new University of Colorado Boulder-led study sheds light on the genetic mechanisms that allowed sunflowers to undergo a relatively rapid evolutionary transition from wild to domesticated in just over 5,000 years.Sunflowers, prized for their seeds and oil, have long held agricultural value for humans. Wild, ancestral varieties of the common sunflower Helianthus annuusare widely distributed across North America and grow smaller seeds than their domesticated counterparts, which have been selected over time for prominent single flower heads and larger seeds with high quality oil.The new study focused on untangling the biological phenomenon of alternative splicing, a regulatory mechanism that allows multicellular organisms to code multiple RNA transcripts and proteins from a single gene. Alternative splicing creates useful efficiencies, but also introduces variation over time. The origins and contributions of alternative splicing to major … [Read more...] about Sunflower Domestication: RNA Study At CU Boulder
CONNECTICUT — The State Department of Health released a school-by-school list of vaccination rates in Connecticut. The decision comes after a number of measles outbreaks throughout the country. There have been more than 700 individual cases of measles in the U.S. from Jan. 1 to April 26 with the disease appearing in 22 states. Connecticut has had three confirmed cases. Overall the immunization rate for Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccine is 96.5 percent for kindergartners and 98.4% for 7th graders in Connecticut, according to DPH's 2017-2018 survey. Connecticut's child vaccination rates overall are higher than the national average, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, there are some schools in Connecticut that have more than 30 percent of its students who have at least one vaccine exemption largely due to religious reasons, according to state officials. "This data is startling and needs to be addressed," said Gov. Ned Lamont. "This cannot become a public health … [Read more...] about School-By-School Vaccination Rates In CT Released
